Just had to have our alternator replaced on our ISC,
It is a LN/2824LC 14V-160A (List price is $508.82) ! but our insurance paid for it all less our deductable. Phew.
After much phoning around and getting the same negative "we dont work on RV's or maybe we can do it in a couple of weeks"Etc., We finally got it done at the Cummins agents at Smokey Mountain Trucks, Kingsport, Tn , also had them reline the front brakes,do a full steering check and a really good lube job while it was in, they did it all with superb next day service.

The alternator doesn't come with the ISC - it is added by the chassis manufacturer (along with the cooling system and fuel supply system and other external components). The size of the alternator used is one of the many things that the customer can specify when the chassis is ordered, so there are likely to be differences among different brands of coaches.

The alternator on your 2001 Newmar Mountain Aire with a Cummins ISC engine on a Spartan chassis is 160-amps.

I assume the alternator charges both the chassis & house batteries.
If that's the case, could this 160A alternator handle two, 12V chassis and six house batteries (instead of the typical four)?

Assuming can get you in trouble, With the engine running use a volt meter to check the battery voltage of your house pack and your chassis pack. If they are receiving a charge from the alternator you will read 13 volts or higher. If the pack is not receiving a charge you will read less than 13 volts.

The alternator can "handle" the battery packs you described. The issue with charging from an alternator is the length of time the alternator will have to run to complete the charge. It's like anything mechanical......the more use to quicker it wears out. A suggestion is to not use the alternator to recharge the batteries but to maintain them while underway.

Hope this helps you

Mine was the same as stated above 2824J and I removed and had it totally rebuilt and replaced (looked like new) for 290.00. I also replaced the ac and serpentine belt for another $40+ while I was doing the work myself. YMMV
