ISL 8.9 370hp eng. common rail system question

I have a 2005 DS 4023. ISL 370 hp.

Engine goes in to limp mode every 55 to 60 miles.
Drained fuel tank and flushed. Very little contamination.
Replaced primary and secondary filters 5 times.

Does the low pressure pump continue to run after engine cranks and is running?
I think the gear driven fuel injection pump takes over.

I have an appointment with Southern Plains Cummins in Houston,Tx. August 6.

Engine runs perfect for 55 to 60 miles and goes into limp mode. I shut the eng. down for 15 to 20 min. and it will run good again.

When priming the fuel system the low pressure pump would run for 45 seconds at first and now only 30 seconds after changing filters the last time.

Checked primary filter the last time after going into limp mode.
Filter half full, drained filter no contaminate found.
Primed 14 times and removed primary filter and found half full.
Topped off primary filter.

If the fuel lines were stopped up it would not run at max. hwy. speed.

oil pressure 50 lbs. + at running speed and eng. temp. 190

Fuel lines look good but could be a problem internally.

I guess it could be a combination of the low pressure pump & ECM.

Any suggestions ? It has gone into limp mode 6 times.

Thank's Robert

Glad you're aboard.

The low pressure pump/transfer pump runs after the initial start up. It supplies pressure to the common rail in the fuel injection pump which supplies the high pressure to the injection nozzles. Your problem could be the pump has started to fail. Could also be some type of internal obstruction in the fuel supply line. You could remove the fuel supply line and use low air pressure air to blow out the line back into the tank and the try it again. Also adapting a manual gauge to the fuel supply line to the injection pump would give you a reading that if below 20 PSI would indicate the transfer pump is failing.

Best of luck on a solution. Enjoy your adventures and be safe.

Make sure your tank vent is not plugged up. Next time it happens take fuel cap off and see if it makes a difference.
