ISL 8.9 power loss

I have a 2005 Alpine coach with the 400 ISL. Today while driving in town, it started to "bog" when I went to accelerate from a dead stop. Couldn't get on Cummins web page, so I figured I'd ask the group. Any ideas?

Be sure all fluid levels are up. Low coolant will cause it to go into a limp mode and reduce power.

Thanks for the reply, Wizard. The fluids are all full, and once the coach gets moving it runs fine...just a few seconds delay until power comes up, which can be a drag if you are in the middle of an intersection. I'll try to pull the codes this morning, but as I am an old school carburetor kinda guy, I'm not sure what they will tell me.

As illogical as this might seem, I would look at the fuel filter(s) first. They may be dirty and restricting fuel flow until the fuel pump gets cranked up.

Check for leaks when parked and see if you have a fuel leak from a bad seal or line. Best time to do that is when you first put the key in, turn the ignition to on (but don't crank it). Then go check under the coach (passenger side) around where the engine meets the transmission. During this time (about 30 seconds) the lift pump is priming the fuel system and you can see if there is any fuel leaking at that time.

If there are no leaks, try crawling under the coach in the same area and look for wet spots.

If there are no fuel leaks, check your air filter and air tubing for cracks and breaks and blockages. Something may be causing the turbine to not spin up as fast. Is your fuel economy suffering?

Since this is a 2005, is the warranty still in place? If so, and you're near a Cummins place, you might want to have them take a look. This way if it's lift pump or fuel pump or turbine related, you can get that taken care of on their dime.

Just a few things to look for, but not all inclusive. Good luck with finding the solution and let us know how it ends up.

All Jim's points are good ones. Another possibility is a small hole in one of your CAC connectors. Do you have a boost gauge and do you watch it regularly? If you do and you see a reduction in boost pressure, you might have a small hole in one of the silicone connectors. This will kill your power in short order.

Let us know what you find.

Good luck,

Steve O
