I just recently purchased an 2008 Newmar Dutch Star, powered by an ISL 8.9 L. engine+ am having a problem with the check engine lite appearing, after it has been in the shop on more than one occassion.Just wondering whether this is a common problem with this model engine,or is not the shop doing it,s job+ properly setting the computers settings ?
Thanks Bruce

Hi Bruce,
Can you tell us when the CEL come on? What was done to the coach, by the techs? When the light comes on, what happens (engine derate itself, engine shut down, etc.)? Once it comes on, does it stay on or go off after a short while? Lastly, is there a trend when the light comes on (like climbing a long grade, under acceleration load, towing a heavy load, cruise on or off)? Any additional information will be helpful.

Hi Gary
I have had the MH for a month how+ it is heading back tothe shop this week for the 3rd time with the check engine lite on.It just comes on+ stays on(I click it off) for no apparent reason.I have on trips twice now(both after a visit to the repair shop) with the lite on,it seems to perform ok.The last time, they apparently replaced "the computer".I will try to get more "details" of the job this time around?I was just wondering whether this is common in these model engines?
Thanks for your questions/thoughts.
Bruce

Bruce, I'm having same issue on ISL425 on 2009 Allegro Bus, here is the history of my events, check engine light first came on around 7000 miles and engine code was indicating excess crankcase pressure. I called Tiffin and was advised Cummins was aware of this and engineers were working on it, Tiffin service advised it was safe to drive and they had not had one yet to progress to stop engine light, well 2hrs later I had stop engine light and was waiting for tow truck to take me to the Cummings shop in Wyoming. Spent 3 days in shop had all valvue guides replaced. I was on the way to Alsaka so continued after engine shop, approx 6500 miles later check engine light on again with same engine code of exess crankcase pressure. I'm still getting check engine light from time to time. What the people at Tiffin and Cummins told me was that there is an issue with this series about how the computer is controlling the turbo. It seems that under certain conditions the software is permitting the turbo to overboost the engine and exceed valve guide specs. I'm still waiting for a call or letter from Cummins about taking it back for reprogramming ( or calibration as they call it).
Alan

Hi Alan
Thanks for your response.I have not yet had the stop engine lite come on.
I am hoping it is a simple calibration,as I am leaving for the Oregon Coast come this Sunday for a couple of weeks, first "big trip" in our new rig!!

Bruce- not common. Has the shop updated the ECU software? mine is some 19 versions (that's correct) behind. Sometimes the software update is to correct a bad diagnostic code threshold that lights the chk engine.
Alan's problem sound different, like actual overboost; although the overboost actually has to escape from the intake or cylinder to cause over pressure in the crankcase; not clear if they fixed all of Alan's problem yet.
If you haven't, you should have Cummins perform all outstanding campaigns; mine has 3 pending- ECU flash (last time I checked they were on v.32- I'm on 13), turbo clock position, and EGR Cooler/Air Compressor Inlet hose. Initial programming on the Diesel Particulate Filter engines took a lot of tweaking, hence the 32 (or maybe more now) versions.

We have over 8k on our Allegro Bus with no check engine lite. I checked with Cummings to be sure that all of the updates to the ECM, including one for the turbo had been done to my engine. As previously mentioned I would think that your Cummings shop has not updated your software, or for some reason it didn't take.
Good Luck!

Mike my software is up to date as of first of Sept when I was at Tiffin . I'm not sure if the issues I have are just a particular production run or not. VP engineer at Cummins is aware of problem. When I was at Tiffin in September , Gary the guy that runs the Powerglide line, said I was the first to have the stop engine, but about 2 hours of me calling in with stop engine light he had another one do exact same thing with stop engine light. However he did say also that he had several customers running with the check engine light on while Cummins works out the issue. As its been explained to me is the excess crankcase pressure will eventually stop up the crankcase breather filter(not sure if right termanolgy or not) and when you stop engine the oil drains out of the filter and depending upon how long the engine is off effects how long it will be again before the filter becomes saturated again and check engine light pops on. Cummins and Tiffin both have been excellent trying to work out my problem and I know they will.
Alan

Just got my MH back from the shop+ apparently it was just a "grid solinode",which has now been replaced twice.hopefully my engine lite problems are over?
Thanks for all your thoughts+ input.
