After having my annual maintainence done and getting some new info I thought there might be some out there who could use it.
I have an 07 EPA 425hp ISL in a 08 Horizon. Unique (I think) to the 07 EPA engines is a new crankcase breather element. Engines have had breather elements for decades but with the new diesel regulations there is a new type. In several of the maintainence documents, including the owner's manual, there is reference to a coalescing filter that should be replaced every two years. During GNR I asked the Cummins reps about this filter and got some blank looks with the exception of one guy. He said that it is the crankcase breather element and located on top of the valve cover and stressed the two year replacement. This element removes airborne oil particles from the recirculating crankcase system. Since this is a closed system, if the element is not changed and gets plugged the system will become pressurized and engine seals will start to leak.
Upon going to my Freightline dealer for annual maintainence I asked that the element be changed. More blank looks! Two hours of research later they did find the relevant info. It seems no one supplies this filter but Fleetguard (a Cummins division) but they only found the filter under a Cummins part number. I also found out that all Fleetguard items also have a Cummins part number (who knew). Anyway maybe someone I can help someone else avoid the long research phase by supplying the appropriate numbers, see below. In some of the documents the element is mentioned, in others, the filter, but never both in the same document.
07 EPA 425hp ISL Crankcase Breather Element/Coalescing filter:
Fleetguard part number: CV5060300
Cummins part number: 4939749
