ISL Serpentine Belt

Doing my usual engine inspections, happen to see a blister on the serpentine belt. Removed the belt for closer inspection, by the way super easy to remove, at least on mine it is.

Found two little rocks embedded in the belt, one had punctured through the belt.

Needless to say, dodged a break down. New belt was $62 from Modern Group

Can you please explain how you removed the belt? I have an ISL and want to change my belt.

yes, you'll need a 1/2" breaker bar with a 3" extension. Insert the extension end into the tensioner square hole so the handle is at about 8 o'clock. Pull on the breaker handle that will lift up the belt tensioner, with the other hand start pulling the belt off the pulleys

Might be good idea to take some pictures of the belt path to put the new one, I did memory not so good anymore!

Took me 10 minutes to change out

Here's my video of the belt path https://photos.app.goo.gl/P1q3xd2DyxhspzJZ7

I used to change out the tensioner every other belt on other equipment

Curious as to the consensus on ISL9 as to the frequency

My tensioner had plenty of fight left in it. I had a 2 foot breaker and felt it. Mileage is 68000 / engine hours 1780. Not sure on if the belt or tensioner has ever been change, I'm the second owner, hardly any service records

Bearings in the tensioner is a common fail point. If you are seeing red or orange dust coming out it is past needing changed. If the bearing locks up the belt will also fail.

Seized tensioner happened to me. 125 mile tow in middle of Utah. Thank goodness for CoachNet.

Cummins recommends changing the tensioner with the belt. This is why:

Stop in any auto parts store and pick up a free serpentine belt groove gauge.
