Hi all

I was under my mh yesterday greasing the chassis. When I started on the u joint I noticed a threaded hole (about 3/4") between the oil pan and the torque converter.

I near crapped myself thinking a bolt had fallen out, but the threads had red factory paint inside the hole so I'm thinking nothing was ever in there.

Anyone know if I am correct?
Why would this be left open in that case?

Thanks in advance...Ed

Cummins leaves that there for just what happened to you. Someone in engineering thinks its funny to scare new Cummins owners the first time they look under. No problem...it's like a belly button, every body has one. Except the CAT guys, now you are one up on them.

It's also left open in case you have a leak with the torque converter or the front trans seal. You will see or find the drip, if it were closed with a threaded plug then the bellhousing could fill before you knew what was going on. It also has other purposes when the engine is used in other applications such as power generation or to drive a commercial liquid pump etc.. It can be used to mount a sensor for crank triggered tachometers or other sensor types in different vocations and applications.

Many if not all Cummins engines are used in multiple applications which aren't always highway related. They are used widely in offshore boats, and vocational type equipment such as large back-up generators.
