Wow, I must have had a different fan installed (Cummins brand OEM two speed). It took Cummins all day. They had to remove the entire rear end of my coach, ... CAC, radiator, body panels, ..the list goes on. Everything about my factory fan was removed and an entirely new fan assembly installed. I still look at the pic's and wonder how they managed to put it all back together.

I watched Cummins install mine through the access panel in the bedroom. Took about a hour from start to finish and checkout. Sounds like your Cummins dealer either didn't know what they were doing, or was on a hourly basis and they really milked it!

Chuck,

I watched the whole process, there was nothing amiss about what they (Cummins) did. Actually the 08 was enough different than the earlier models there was MORE to be removed. I was amazed at the amount of hardware removed and replaced with new (all part of the kit).

I have no reservations about the mechanic who was a senior in the shop. The Cummins center is across the street from the Coburg Monaco factory and supplies all the engines and service for the Monaco production line. These guys know their stuff, but I did find there was a huge difference in CAC and radiator design once the ULSD design kicked in. And you guessed it, I have the latter.

I was also there during inspection, and can tell you there is virtually zero access to the fan from the hatch in the bedroom floor.

I'm thinking in this thread we might all be referring to two different fan modifications, mine is the Cummins OEM two speed (viscous and clutch), not aftermarket. I can't speak for any aftermarket fan mods, only the one I was part of. My preference was to go with Cummins and have them do the work, keeping everything combined with the Cummins warranty.

All said, I have a good two speed fan setup, and I'm totally happy with the outcome. I couldn't ask for much more.

Corkey, the one that I had installed was called the Horton two speed fan. It was installed through the bedroom hatch. It must be the fact that yours is the 2008 model. Mine is the 2006 model with the rear rad.

jack markin also installed our horton clutch. he did a great job and i'm very happy with him and the product! we have a 02 isc santiam which had one of the bad cooling core radiators which had the need to install an aux. trans cooler/radiator. the problem is that since the horton clutch senses the engine coolant temp it may not recognize the trans. temp since they are no longer connected. jack installed an aux. manual switch so when the need arises you can manually switch the fan on so you can cool the trans if needed. if anybody has this mod done make sure you have the switch installed. jim

Corkey,
I have a 2008 ULSD also. I was not aware Cummins made a 2 speed fan. I thought they were all supplied by Horton. Either way, I am happy with mine and you are happy with yours, so life is good. Does your coach floorplan not allow access to the engine in the bedroom?

I just pulled up the photo's and mine is a Horton too. I quick little bit of research tells me Horton is the supplier for the Cummins two speed fan, so it appears we all have the same one. I also found some MH builders include the fan and it's delivered included by Cummins. Why it would be left off is beyond me, as the actual fan cost is small during mfg. But I guess the bean counters carry all the weight.

Yes I have a back hatch to the engine, but was surprised to find nothing but nice view of the engine head when it was open, the engine fan is under the closet. I suppose it's possible to reach the fan, but the best I could do was touch the back side of one of the blades. working on the fan would be impossible from there. Now if the closet floor had a hatch, it would have made a huge difference.

I wish I hadn't reviewed the pic's, wow was back of that coach all opened up ugly.

Corkey, what did you pay for the install? Just wondering.

Corkey,
Forgot to mention in our coach when you remove the lower track for the closet doors there is a additional access panel for the engine. It opens right on top of the fan.

I have a rear radiator with an always on fan, 5.9 ISB. I looked into a Horton fan a while back and rejected it as never paying for itself and another thing to fail. It would be nice if there were controls on all diesel fans from the factory. In reading posts on clutch fans I find that some switch on at about 210 degrees and bring the temperature back down to the 180s. OTOH my always on fan keeps a much more even temperature in the 180s and occasionally barely over 190. I would feel uncomfortable with the temperature cycling from 180 to 210. Wouldn't that cause some problems in the materials in the engine, like the exhaust manifold, or even the efficiency of the engine at the higher temp? Some clutch fans are proportional and keep a more constant temperature and that is what I would want.
