ISM 500 Crankcase Ventilation Filter

Multi-part question:

1) Is there a Crankase Ventilation Filter on a 2005 (yr of manufacture) Cummins ISM 500?
2) If so, where is it located?
3) part number?
4) any details on replacement?

thanks.

We owned a 04 Essex with the 500 ISM engine for 14 years and drove it 14K miles. To the best I know at least till 07 there was no crankcase ventilation system. There is a road draft tube that runs down under the engine in the middle on the passengers side. Because you get a slight amount of oil out of the tube some put a catch can under tube so it doesn't get on back of coach or tow. I connected with a pipe to the exhaust so it didn't get oil on tow. Work great for the 14 years we owned the coach.

Can you access the top of engine? It maybe have one. Google it for a pic.
Located on top of rocker cover.
Depending on the actual year model of engine, not coach.

Thanks guys. I guess the only way to tell for sure is to pull the bedroom hatch and have a look. The illustration I have has no year but shows a filter behind the turbo. I'll update when I can look (it's in the high 40's today).

Its my understanding that CCV filters came out on EPA07 Cummins engines
Cummins did not design ALL CCV filters on the top of engine valve cover as ILS & ISB have. Some engines have a separate filter housing assy located on engine exterior.
With that said, I found this CCV filter assy for 2007 ISX & ISM. So yes, it does have one and here's what it looks like. But on an 05 engine I don't think so. Should find the CC vent hose under engine. Call Cummins Quickserv with your ESN.

Same here .... found the filter for a 2007 and later. Not clear on earlier engines and can't see the area without lifting the bedroom hatch. I'll have a look as soon as the temp goes up a bit. The 2007 has it tucked in (almost flat) near the turbo. Should be obvious when I open the floor. I know it is NOT on top of the valve cover.

Thanks, Bruce

....if you can safely slide under coach, on. Drivers side, right beside oil filter you'll see a 5/8" or so piece of hose pointing down. If you have a open crankcase ventilation system, that hose is it.

I suspect you have a open crankcase system, but mfg. we're all over the board in regards to emissions along that time.

Ours is also on the passenger side. Its a large black hose that runs down the side to the bottom of the oil pan. This is the left side of the engine, but engines sit backwards in these coaches.

If you have a draft tube, there is probably a large deposit of dirt/gunk on the side of the pan where it exits.

Anxiously awaiting a rise in the outside temp and less rain ... can't handle the cold wet ground anymore. A few more days should do it.

AZ is sounding good. We are actually on our way to Maine from winter in FL. Caught a few ugly days but mostly good. Had a nice week in Newport RI and Cape Cod. Arrived in Hampton Falls NH this afternoon.

My ILS is a 2004 and has the crankcase filter on top of the valve cover.

Below is a picture of the oil ventilation draft tube on our ISX.
It starts at the round fitting in the timing cover just under the lower AC hose. It has a black hose attached that is painted red and runs down the front side of the engine along side the dip stick to the oil pan rail. It then runs back along the pan rail about 2 feet.

I was at a Newmar rally back in 2016 and Spartan sold me a bunch of filters for my coach, including a CV filter.

I took the filters to Cummins for the annual service and they gave me back the CV filter stating my coach did not have such a filter.
