ISM failure 42,000.00 .

So had a catastrophic failure of our 500hp ISM. Does $42,000.00 sound about right to replace by a Cummins dealer? Just curious.
Thanks

ISM is one of the most reliable Cummins, what happened?

The bill to rebuild my ISX was over $33,000 and that was a new head, valves, 2 liners, two pistons and rods, new turbo, new DPF and cleaning the engine. That was just to rebuild what I had, block and most of the engine was good

$42,000 sounds like a bargain for a reman ISM installed.

Holy Cow! I think I just got over my diesel envy.

How many dealers have you contacted for a price?

Small end of rod through side of block. Full oil and coolant. Fresh service 1500 miles ago. Just went all at once no warning. Hole was so high up even after failure still full of oil and coolant.

So, so sorry! That is a tough pill to swallow I'm sure. Please keep us posted on the reason for failure. Do you do oil analysis?

Is it possible for some form of insurance to cover the cost described?

Only a service policy would do that and so far the OP hasn't said they have one.

I would think Cummins would take care of that, but I don't know how old it is but I am sure It don't have many miles. It should run a Million trouble free miles

Out of warranty, so no warranty coverage. Cummins now is NOT the Cummins of old. The bean counters have taken over. Go to the Cummins forum here and do a search on "dropped a valve in #6" there are several threads on it.

Read recently somewhere here that Cummins had issues with the piston pins and a warranty TSB was cited.

Before thet start to work on your coach at Cummins you need to join Cummins Power Club for 10% of all parts and labor. That would be 4200$.

I just renewed and would recommend all irv2 Cummins owners do the same.

Discounts do not apply to engines (New Cummins or ReCon Engines) and or generator sets.
