What are you seeing for mpg from the rebuild Dean? These days depending on wind I am getting between 5.75 and 7.34.

Seems about right but overall it's 7.1 which isn't bad considering. I'm really not seeing much change from before and it's still pretty new on new mains, rod bearings, liners, and pistons. Pretty much new wearing parts from the crank up. Hopefully I'll live long enough to break it in.

Mr_D - you probably know this, but a new (rebuilt) engine needs to be broken in under heavy load as soon as possible. Don't idle or baby engine.
Cummins dealer should have already had engine on their chassis dyno for break in.

This is video on subject (not a Cummins video, but same break in reasons) Don't bother watchign the whole video - the main info is around the 8 minute mark.

Nope, no chassis dyno. They just took it out and drove it. Cummins told me to drive it like normal. I didn't use the cruise control for the first 110 miles and varied my speed. I'm in Iowa now, climbed all the grades at whatever throttle I needed to maintain the speed I wanted including some miles at 100%. Of course there were miles of rolling hills and flatlands. Seems like a pretty good break in to me.

Sounds good. Our coaches are pretty heavy (not like a tractor bobtailing) so there will be a load on the engine. At least you have some hills. Im in Fl

Just got home from Iowa, 4,855 miles since the rebuild. The last 500 miles the engine performance has gone way up, better in fact than the previous rebuild with more miles. One hill I could barely hold 55 in 4th gear at WOT I climbed in 5th and still had throttle left. Still have more vibration than before though.

Mr._D, just curious, where are you feeling the vibration (steering? chassis? pedals?).

And, from your experience, what do you think would cause the vibration? (motor mounts?).

Glad that you are able to get on the road again!

Safe travels,
Mark

Feel the vibration through the seat, feet and touching. Feels like the vibration damper is slightly off but it's keyed so that's not it.

Check the vib damper for possible damage. If it is a fluid damper, any dents on it will cause BIG problems in the future, like a broken crankshaft! I have seen that happen.
We used to check dampers by feeling the tempurature after a short run. They will heat up quicker than the center because of the internal friction.
Find a shop that can do a cylinder balance test, maybe you have a weak injector. That would show up under heavier loads.
Happy Glamping.

vibration in neutral? Or just while driving? If just while driving, driveshaft alignment? Was the entire block removed from the rig?

I did have a few pipes that were against structural parts of the chassis after my rebuild.

It was found at my annual service and they mounted a few extra brackets.

I also did have a vibration once and it was the exhaust pipe for the aquahot. On our coach the exhaust runs back, over the axle and out the back. At one point it was a little too close to the chassis so under hard acceleration I would feel it in my feet.

Angry 650 HP ISX CM871 built Apr 29, 2008, #6 Intake Valve

Did the idea of a class action lawsuit go anywhere?

Just going through turbo replacement, injector replacements, and head replacement due to a broken intake valve on #6.

Not sure if there is more damage until the head gets taken off but it appears from the scoping of #6, there is no cylinder damage.

Same as everyone else, started up, ran rough, the check engine light came on, then stop engine light, and the then engine shut down.

I was able to get over to the shoulder of an on ramp on the freeway I was on, and luckily was only 4 miles from the facility where we get our service work done.

I guess the lucky part is where it happened. Not so much on everything else.

Don't seem a class action suit is going any where, A friend's 08 King Aire is in the shop now after breaking down on a trip, quoted 40k to repair!!
One fella on here sued Cummins in Penna. civil court and won, max amount allowed in Penna. was 12k.

In every failure I have seen, there is liner damage.....

Attorneys want too many reported failures before they will take the case. So far not enough have been reported to them or at least not to the ones I looked up. I do have permission from the moderators to post the info. I'll do that later today and trust everyone here to pass it on.
