Jake Brake Broke/Low Oil Pressure

Coming down a 7 miles 6% decline switched on the Jake and the Check Engine Light comes on. Turn Jake off light goes out. Change downhill protocol big time .

After 2 days at the Freightliner / Cummins facility in Flagstaff AZ it seems that the Jake Actuator broke do when the Jake was used all oil from the pump was pouring into the valve train causing oil pressure to drop.

Dry camping in the parking lot lots of generator and Oasis time night time weather is mid 30s. Hopefully they will get the parts tomorrow. Sure wish they had power!

Stay safe everyone

Steve

I am lead to believe that it shouldn't be too long once they get the parts. To help expedite we will probably run down to Phoenix to get the parts otherwise they will not arrive until Friday

Steve,
Sorry to read about your Jake going out. Let us know when you are able to hit the road again. Did you have a chance to do the train ride from Williams yet?

We did today Lloyd and if was great fun. Coach was finished today (Friday) 3 nights camping at the freightliner shop was enough! Good news is that the Jake seems to be working well. Bad news is just add we got to the bottom of a 6% hill the Check Engine Light flashed on for a brief second. We are parked at the Railroad RV Park in Williams until Wednesday.

Steve, were you at the Rush Truck facility? We had a fuel injector line crack a few years ago, we were parked in the rest area east of Flagstaff. If so, I'm surprised they didn't offer you one day delivery of parts from Phoenix. We paid an extra $50 to get them in one day.

I believe that was the place Mike. If we would have had them deliver (even overnight) we would not been finished until Saturday and then waiting to get extended warranty approval would probably have had us there over the weekend. Being from Texas a 300 mile round trip is just around the corner! So by getting the part there by noon of that day saved us at least 1 extra night in their parking lot! We had snow on Thursday night and low temps into the high 20s so were were running the generator and oasis all night for those 3 nights. I just had about 900watts of solar installed and that seemed to keep the batteries fully charged during the day.

I actually got mine the same day. I was there when they opened, got it around 3pm and installed by 6pm. Didn't really want to spend another night in the rest area. I was going to drive to Phoenix also until he said they could have it there the same day for the extra fee. Anyway, glad you could get out of there, not the way you want to spend a vacation.

Spinn, That is a nice RV Park you chose. We go over to Williams quite ofton during the summer and fall months just to get away from the Vegas heat. Williams is a nice town to get away and relax at. Hope the repair works.
Good Luck
JP

Low Oil Pressure when Using Jake Brake

I posted the initial problem we were having on the Newmar forum but now that it had reoccurred I need advice.

When traveling down a long decline 6% 7 miles when I applied the Jake brake I had a Check Engine Light come on. Rode or the hill with just transmission and service brakes. Took it to the Freightliner (Cummins dealer) in flagstaff. Their diagnosis indicated CEL was from low oil pressure. Pulling the valve cover they identified the problem as the Jake actuator leaking oil. "O" ring was broken allowing all oil to be pumped into the valve area and oil pressure dropped.

After 3 nights in their parking lot they installed a Jake overhaul kit and sent me on my way. Were traveled less than a100 miles before encountering a 6% grade. Confidentally I switched the Jake on and all seemed well. At the very bottom of the hill CEL comes on Vmspec decoded code as low oil pressure.

Will take it back to flagstaff this week but any ideas from the forum would be appreciated.

Steve
