I just bought 2 quarts of Lucus Fuel Treatment (upper cylinder lubricant). A friend uses it in his diesel pickup and gasoline powered car.

I'm hoping it improves engine performance and increases the MPG of my Cummins C8.3 (300hp) mechanical engine.

Has anyone used this treatment in their cummins or CAT engines?

I doubt there is anything made that you dump in your tank to increase fuel mileage or power. If there were the oil companies would be adding it.

I believe that what is better than most any fuel additive is controlling ones lead foot.
I just returned from a 700 mile trip,Escondido,Ca. to Bishop Ca. and back and averaged 7.9 mpg average speed 62mph.

Ed,

I agree with you about mileage. I used to routinely get 8 to 8.5 mpg at 64 mph. When we left TN on 9/5 headed for NY I decided to travel at 60 mph. That gave me 9.5 mpg!

Even so, I wonder if there is any real benefit to the engine, injectors and other components along the fuel path to having the additives in this fuel treatment?

An increase in mpg would be measurable and desirable, but what about saving wear and tear on the combustion system? What about a bit more power when needed?

Most parts jobbers in my area feel the Lucas products are a cut above the rest. I was facing some expensive injector work on my daughters car and was told to try a few tankfulls of the Lucas fuel treatment. It worked after two tanksfulls. No more misfire engine codes since then. I have her treat one tankfull every month now and she has had no more problems with clogged injectors.

This was on a used vehicle which for some reason are the only ones that I have had this type of problem with. Fuel injected vehicles that I have bought new even after 100,000 miles have not required this.

So for me if you don't have a problem the Lucas pobably won't hurt anything however I have not used it in a diesel and if you are having a problem it could very well save you the expense of replacing clogged injectors.

Neil V,

thanks for your response.

My objective is preventitive in nature as I'm not having any problems (that I'm aware of).

When I fuel up in CT later today I'll ad a quart and hope for the best.

Before buying our moho, I had several Ford diesel pickups for towing 5ers. Thru other users I discovered Stanadyne diesel fuel treatment. I learned that Stanadyne is used extensively by truckers in heavy semis. After purchasing a F350 diesel, I came across an inclusion in the owners manual - if any fuel additive was to be used it is limited to Stanadyne... After using this additive in two diesel trucks I am convinced that, as advertised, this product does in fact keep the injectors clean and operating freely; in addition it increases the cetane level. I have just started using it in the moho which has just 14K miles on it. I have noticed just one change - throttle response is crisper; the next long trip (AZ) should tell me more.

A little more about LUCAS products. For years owners of series 4 Corvettes (82-93?) were plagued by problems with the power steering rack sticking and not working. Most often it meant replacing the entire rack at significant expense. I can take credit for discovering Lucas Power Steering Additive and trying it in my Corvette that was about to get 750.00 spent on the power steering system. In less than 15 minutes of use the problem I had for years, that of a sticking powere boost, disappeared forever. It is now the standard on Corvette forums for taking care of this long existing problem. As far as I am concerned Lucas makes good stuff. No, I am not affiliated with Lucas who is located in Corona, CA, just a few miles away.

I used to have a 97 nissan quest 2 years back. About 3 years back the check engine light came on and the engine was shaking like crazy. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was one of the injectors. He had to open the intake manifold in order to get to it so he wanted to charge me $540. I said i would wait a while 'cuz I was short on cash (was having some rough time) and was just about to leave the shop as another mechanic pulled me to the side and suggested I give Lucas Fuel treatment a try and asked me not to tell his boss about our conversation. I went out and spent 10 bucks and got a qt. I put a good amount in it and by the time I was 3/4 way done with my 1st tankful of gas, the shaking stopped and evantually the MIL went off. I did not get better fuel mileage but sure beats paying $540.

Tom N,
I'm not as sure as you are about fuel tank additives not increasing MPG. I had about 40K miles on my coach with a trip average of 7.4 MPG. This is measured over 2K mile increments or longer. I started using Stanadyne Performance Formula and my MPG has risen to a consistent 8.4 MPG. All other things are equal. This is over 4.5K miles. I'm not quite ready to jump for joy yet. When 2009 ends and I have another 12K using the product, I'll report the results on iRV2.

If you want to read up on the product go here. For me, the gross additional cost is about 10 cents per gallon of fuel. If the new MPG holds true, there is no net cost. I will be saving $s.

I was using Power Service in our MH and diesel tractor to help with upper cyl. lubrication and in the case of the tractor, cylinder washdown due to extensive idling.

It works as advertised and the throttle response on both is crisper.

That being said, My BIL buys a LOT of Lucas stuff and has given me some diesel and gas fuel additives/stabilizers to try.

Re: Standyne, most performance diesel shops and engine rebuilders swear buy this stuff. It does exactly what they advertise.

I will try some after my PS and Lucas stuff runs out.

i use LUCAS fuel additive in my 8.1 W/H moho gasser and am well pleased with my results. i can't tell much difference mpg wise but it seemed to free the engine up a lot on several hills in east tn. one in perticular always required a downshift-now it just keeps the speed constant. to me peace of mind is worth the price.
