A lot of older, automotive P/S pumps used ATF, then slowly started to change over to dedicated P/S fluids, particularly on rack and pinion steering vehicles. I don't know if any current P/S fluid would meet all the Dexron III spec's or how you would find out, but when we performed systems flushes we always used the ATF or Fluid recommended by model year.
On the off chance that your pump would not tolerate P/S fluid , stick with the Dexron III.

Beeper: I finally found my link to an older RV Chassis Maintenance manual. The information is a lot closer to our model years, without the "distractions" on the newer chassis. Better detail on the power steering and procedures for changing the fluid and purging the system.

Freightliner Manual: http://www.rvtechlibrary.com/chassis...int_manual.pdf
The RV tech Library itself has a lot of information. http://www.rvtechlibrary.com/
I put it on a disc with my pubs..
