Oil analysis Should I worry?
Just had an oil analysis done at speedco. It showed my potassium level at 34 ppm and sodium level at 42 ppm. The person doing the analysis said this indicates some antifreeze in the oil but could not tell me if it was severe or not. Everything else was in normal range. Should I be worried?

Oil analysis is great for trending. Best thing to do is to check the next one and see if it is better or worse

I forgot to state above that the oil analyzed had 6000 miles before change.

That's not horrible since most automakers now state 7500 miles between changes

But diesel engine manufacturers typically recommend much longer intervals. Those 6,000 miles may be only a third of his recommended change interval.

How many miles on the oil? How long until you change it? Is this your first UOA? I would run it for another 1000 miles and sample again if I was concerned PLUS keep a real close eye on the oil for anything that looked out of place like change of color, feel, smell, etc. I know that isn't a real scientific way of monitoring, but you need to get some sort of a trend for the condition of things.

don't trust speedco analysis too much. change oil and run 5000 miles, then send the sample to blackstone.

I would not panic about a Speedco analysis. We have them do analysis each time we change oil. 3 tests in 3 years so far, all results different, no trend.
first test had slightly high glycol (I think). I almost freaked out.
second test was absolutely perfect.
third test something else was slightly high.
Like suggested by others... Use Blackstone or other lab for true results and use the information to establish a trend. No need to panic.

I use Blackstone for my airplane. Good people there.

So, if I were interested in buying a used motorhome, an oil analysis isn't worth much, since I would have no history?

Good advice. Run for another 800-1000 miles and re sample. Not all labs are the same. I use this gizmo to pull a sample from the dipstick tube. Easy/Peasy.
I believe most labs sell the kit along with their sample bottles.

No it will give you the information you would need to see if the motor has a major problem on not! The blackstone lab will spell it all out for you if it has high levels of metals, or other things that are higher than the normal range!
A Speedco oil analysis is just a very vague, generic, not very accurate type of analysis! Not really anything I would really take stock in.

I would hate to see what the analyze would be on my 1990 with 170000 miles on it?

I am guessing the cost for the kit is probably more than a fumoto valve. after you drain the oil, instead of putting the oil drain plug back on, threading the fumoto on. ever after from then, you will enjoy taking sample or changing oil in a blitz.
