Oil Consumption

We just finished a 3100 mile trip. I had to add a quart of oil along the way. Is this normal? Also, the front of the toad was a total mess with a thick film of oil. I have a slober tube container installed, and it was not that full. I am unsure how all the oil is getting on the toad. I have no oil leaking on the ground when I store the coach.

1 qt per 500 miles is within normal specs, let alone 1 qt per 3100 miles.

I agree with Mr. D and will add that if you overfilled the crankcase in the first place it will expel the overfilled amount in the first few thousand miles.
One quart is only about 1/20 of the engines capacity. No big deal. Let it go down that quart and see if it stabilizes at that level. My guess is it will and the spatter on your toad will disappear.
Now if it gets down two or three quarts, that could be an issue that requires more investigation.

I'm finding that with the previous ISC 350 and the present ISX 650 that filling to the top of the full zone results in oil being thrown out. If I leave the level in the middle of the crosshatched zone it burns a little but none is thrown out.

$64,000 question. If my slober tube container is NOT full of oil, where is the oil blowing out from?

If it's not coming from blow by hose, it's got a leak. Or out exhaust pipe & if that's the case it'd be pouring out the blow by hose....
If you can safely get under coach with a flashlight perhaps you'll see it...

I noticed same thing. If I try to fill it full it loses some but then stays right there. My new "full" mark is a slightly below the mid point on the hatched area.

On our previous coach, '95 Monaco Dynasty with Cummins C8.3 mechanical engine, if I filled the crankcase to the Full Mark on the dipstick, the engine would rapidly burn the oil until the level was halfway between the Full and Add. Then it would not burn anymore oil at all.

I've had two 400 ISLs and this 600 ISX and none of these engines have ever used a drop of oil. The one exception was a small leak on our '04 Bus when new because the hydraulic fan drive pump wasn't torqued down and we had a gasket leak. That small leak did create a big mess on the front of the toad after a 5,000 mile trip.

If you have oil on the front of the toad and don't see any visible leaks on the engine then I would do an oil change. Be sure to fill the engine with the correct amount of oil per specs rather than according to the dipstick. Then check you dipstick. Dipsticks can be off and you can adjust them by sliding the tube and reclamping in many cases. If the oil level is high the crankshaft can whip it, creating a foam that will exit the breather and make a mess. It also doesn't do your engine any good to be pumping foamy oil through it. Running it between the add and full marks won't hurt it one bit. That's a two quart spread and with 27-28 quarts it won't make a difference.

8000+ miles on our ISC this year and since oil change. Zero oil consumption. Stays right on the full mark. 32000 total miles on the engine.

.... just curious, but how is dipstick marked? Mine has a "full" a safe zone hash mark area and a "add"

On most engines as long as the level is in the safe zone it's all good. One quart isn't low in the big picture....

btw, on mine the "add" mark is a gallon to full....

Mine was on the add mark so maybe it actually burned/threw out 4 qts. In 3100 miles.

If it did in fact use 4 qts in 3100 miles, it bears further investigation. Normal consumption should be in the range of a quart every 3-5 thousand miles.
The only way it could throw out oil is through the breather tube or a leak. Either of these are easy to spot.

If there are no leaks and the breather tube area is not saturated, you must be burning it. Hope that's not the case but, That could get expensive.

1 gallon in 3k .... you'd see it somewhere, either oil leak/residual on rear of coach or LOTS of smoke out tail pipe.

My advice is run it, keep a check on it, once it gets to add mark, run it a little more and see if it's just "seeking it's full mark"

Also make sure air filter is clean. Air restriction will cause oil use as well....
