JWe just got a 1998 Holiday Rambler with the 5.9 Cummins (84,000 miles). We're on our first trip with this coach and I found spots of oil over the front of the toad. I took a look underneath and I would guess that oil is coming from the breather pipe. Any ideas what might cause this? Any suggestions ?

Hi Chonburiman,
The breather tube is more affectionately known as the slobber tube. Even if everything is operating normally, there will be some minor amount of oil slobbering out the tube. This should not be enough to get on your toad. If it were me, I'd have Cummins/Coach Care check the engine out at the next maintenance servicing. At that time you can have them reposition the tube so any oil coming out will not end up on your toad. This is what I did. Some have put a bottle at the end of the tube to catch the oil. I did not like this solution as it added another "to do" to my long list of maintenance tasks.

Do a search on slobber tube and read forever. Or, go to this link Dumb Question,Slobber Tube
for a couple pics to see what some have done.

Chonburiman: G'morning from Tampa. Say,....this might be WAY off target, but,....FWIW, we once had what at first appeared to be an oily spray over the front of our toad which I noticed at a rest area stop just about 30 miles after having Cummins Service. In fact, it turned out that a tech had overfilled engine coolant reservoir, such that excess blew off through overfill tube after engine heated up. Felt like oil, looked like oil, but wasn't. Just a thought....ignore this if it's useless info. Steve

Also, make sure that the engine has not been overfilled with oil.

You may want to check the hoses from the transmission to radiator. We had a problem also where the hoses were not crimped correctly at the radiator. We had to have new hoses made -- out of warranty and Good Sam's CPS would not pay for it. Such is life.

Moving the slobber tube to aft of the radiator, as recommended by other posters, will keep the radiator cleaner. An oil collection canister, such as the JAZ or homemade, will collect oil or oil mist and keep the radiator and toad clean. Oil overfilling is the main culprit for oil being expelled out of the slobber tube.
