My 2000 cummins 24v 5.9 ISB was a "53 block" (Google 53 block) that zippered the block at 54k miles 3 years ago. New block replacement over $12k.

Ah yes, the transmission. Thanks! I'll add that to the list of checks. There is a lot going on in that thing but I don't see a lot of conversation about its dependability or if there are any issues. Maybe I just haven't been to those threads yet, but i get the image that the Allison is one dependable trans.
