I just let my engine idle thru the refueling.I would never do that with a gas engine. Any thoughts on this?

Is it legal or maybe even lethal to let a diesel engine idle during fueling?

I don't believe it's illegal, nor lethal to let your diesel idle during refueling.

Since there is no electrical ignition system on a diesel, and diesel fuel is not as explosive as gasoline (fumes), there is little danger, IMHO.

Many truckers do, but that doesn't make it right.

However, I don't see the need to idle my diesel any more than necessary as it just wastes fuel.

Some states or cities now have laws against excessive idling. In Virginia or New York City, for example, no vehicle engine can be left idling for more than 3 minutes (there are a few exceptions allowed, though).

Local laws dictate shutting off a diesel engine or allowing it to idle while re-fueling. There is virtually no danger of starting a fire this way. You create more electrical spark risk just by opening/closing your vehicle door than allowing a diesel to run.
This is my opinion, not to be accepted at face value as fact.
