Radiator fan

I have a 2000 MADP with the cummins 350. The other day, I noticed the chunk out of the fan blades. Checked and all have similar chunks gone, but the blades aren't hitting anything.
Anyone else ever notice the same or have an explanation?

I did not have big chunks gone like yous, I must of found my problem early.......check the fan/hyd. pump mount that bolts to the frame rail, look at the 90 deg. bends near frame..........one side of mine was cracked from top to bottom, broke right off...................allowing the fan to hit the shroud at higher rmp's.

Any chance a critter was in the way when you started the engine? Could of happened some time ago so there won't be any remains left.
Critters like squire, raccoons and even cats like to crawl up there for warmth.

Best to replace fan regardless of cause.

Your some what lucky. I've seen a raccoon take out the the radiator,ac cooler and the air cooler resulting in several thousands of repairs.

good luck

I wouldn't think it was a critter. The blades are way too stout. Now, a big ass turtle . . . 😉

found the problem. now what?

The fan blades all have a 3" x 2" chunk knocked out on the ends way from the radiator (side radiator), I described, previously.
I just crawled under there and noticed that the fan shroud toward the front of the chassis is 3 - 4 inches too far to the rear, in relation to the fan, and 3 -4 inches too low, in relation to the fan. Thus, the chunks worn out of the blade.
Is there a fix for this, since I am assuming that I am losing some cooling capacity because of that?
I have also contacted Cummins, Newmar, and Spartan for assistance.

Did you take a good look at the fan/hyd. motor mount?

No. Didn't think an adjustments was possible there in order to center it. I didn't notice anything that would indicate it had moved.
Guess I better take a closers look.
Thanks for mentioning it again. I'm old and slow, but I get there 😉

Come to think of it. On this last trip of 3400 miles, I twice heard a noise that sounded like aardvark airpump, when I got out and walked to the rear at a stop with the motor still running. Shoot. Wonder if what I heard were the blades against the shroud?

Palehorse89, you have it right on the money!
Just crawled under there and I am astounded that the whole fan assembly didn't just fly off of there. Only one of the two L brackets is still attached to the fan housing and the housing is so loose, I can move it around by hand!😀
I must be living right to not have any major damage.
Now, I have to figure out how to get it fixed. I am currently in Pahrump, NV and I sure don't want to risk starting it, much less driving it somewhere?

Good luck in your repair .........I welded mine up right in place.....a very tight place to weld..........I used C-clamp's to position in back in place.
Been holding up.........think it is stronger now welded.....those 90 deg. bends are a weak point.........

Have found a diesel shop that does mobile repair. So, will be able to get it done right here. Definitely, ordering a new fun.
Thanks for your great input. It made it possible to find the issue right away.
Not traveling until mid November, so, plenty of time to get a new fan, etc.😆

Mechanics are coming by, today. I did an even closers inspection, today, and found that the entire mount is broken and the only thing that kept the fan from dropping down and doing incredible damage is the metal elbow that is on the hose which attaches to the fan housing. The insure was taken from the bottom up.
Received helpful emails from Newmar, Spartan, and Cummins. Great companies, all.
