Regen Warning Lamp (HEST)

Something that I have not been able to find an answer to in manuals is proper handling of the re-gen (HEST) warning lamp. My major question deals with is it okay to shut the engine down while the re-gen lamp is illuminated? Minor question is how long does it normally take for the re-gen cycle?

I had the Phaeton out the other day to top off propane and fuel before our trip to Red Bay and the HEST lamp came on. I couldn't pull in to the pumps and leave it running with the high exhaust temperature, so I wound up driving around for twenty minutes until it finally went off.

The Power Glide manual says you can shut the engine down in an emergency with the lamp on, but doesn't say anything about letting it run until it turns off or just turning the engine off. I've had it come on after pulling into a rest stop, etc and just let the engine idle until we pulled out.

I think the answer is don't shut off when the High Exhaust System Temperature light is on and if you must idle use high idle.

If you have to shut down, you have to shut down! All that will happen is the next time your up to speed, the regen cycle will start over.

This would be best practices, and as noted, bump up idle speed.....or as long as it's not in Regen get on interstate and run it.

but if in a emergency must shut down deal, you do what you have to.

Regen time can vary, I've seen many complete it around 15 to 20 minutes....but have a few that have taken longer. It will depend on DPF condition.

I cut and pasted this from my manual... I have a Cummings ISB340.

"If the engine is turned off during an active regeneration cycle, the cycle
will automatically begin again (if necessary) when the motorhome is
operated at speeds above 20 mph."

My active regeneration cycle won't work below 20 mph, so high idle won't work. It's no big deal to have the HEST light on... that's normal and usually takes about 20-40 minutes to complete. If there is an issue, your DPF light should come on... that's telling you that you need to let the HEST cycle complete or (eventually) it will create a "derate" situation.

I can send you the pages on this topic if you provide me an email address.
