replacing faulty gauges

first time diesel here
until my first trip during the holidays i new nothing about diesel engines .
spent 3 days broke down in central fla. anyway i would like to know how to set dip switches on dixson tachs and where do they connect to engine . if at alt. how do i tell if i have the right alt it looks new and the plug that was in the old one looks to be tied up out of the way and alt is connected directly to bat with what looks to be an exciter wire
please help as you can tell im not too good with typing either

Not quite sure what you're talking about either. However I have had problems with my Crank Position Sensor which made my tach not work on my 1997 Dodge Ram. This sensor is located just over the harmonic balancer on the front of the motor. Replaced that and all was good.

M-Joe,
Checked your profile to see if I could find the year/make of your coach. Not finding that, I can (generically) add that "...the old one looks to be tied up out of the way" probably confirms that your alternator was replaced at some point, and the new one has an internal regulator (and the old one had an external regulator).
