I'm taking my 08 isl 400 to speedco for an oil change. Thinking about a coolant change also. Had this RV for 2 years . not sure of history. Any thoughts?

I am the OP. I’m ready to tackle my coolant job. Today I drained a bit and it was green. Is this a positive indication I have the SCA coolant? If so, does that automatically mean I have a coolant filter with the SCA additive? (2006 built ISL 400)

I’m not going to go cheap by all means! As I will just switch to OAT. That said, does anyone know if my engine has the coolant filter?

One more question, (just curious) can you mix SCA and OAT in a pinch?

Sorry...The ISL stopped being built with a coolant filter...but I do not know what year.

Look underneath...If you have one it will be snuggled in between the oil filter and the water pump.

Google Cummins Filtration...there is a tech paper on mixing C oolants. The way I read it...all of the common HD Diesel Collants are Ethylene glycol based...and can be mixed. There is even some method of adding OAT to make a changeover. I would flush until clear with deionized water and replace with new coolant.

Color means nothing...there seems to be no standard. The nitrited SCA coolant that we have is PURPLE... the only way to tell is to use a test kit or send it off to a lab. Most guidance says if in doubt...replace it with a known entity.

When Cummins rebuilt my ISX they used 25 gallons of CC36077 OAT coolant.
That googles to ES Complete OAT

I just ordered 20 gal of cc36077 the OAT coolant at a 30% off at Cummings dealer sale price is net $9.16 gallon. Smoking deal!!!

My rig had been filled with Final Charge bt the previous owner. I couldn't find the strips anywhere so I emailed Peak. They replied quickly and sent me a Final Charge test strip kit, free of charge. I have pilled a sample and tested every year during anual maintainence. This has been about 3 years ago, so this year I will send a sample to JG Lubricants, along with the other usual samples, just to confirm the results of the test strips.

Made an appointment at a Freightliner Oasis Service Center to have the engine cooling system drained, flushed and refilled. Having read all the posts regarding the problem of the Freightliner cooling system sensors being damaged by non-SCA coolant, mentioned the label on the radiator stating "Use only Fully Formulated (w/SCA) Purple HD Conventional Coolant" and asked if that would be used. Was told that the service facility was a Freightliner Service Center and only used Freightliner Factory approved parts. After completion of the work reviewed the detailed invoice stating that Fleetguard CC36077 ES Compleat EG OAT coolant had been used. Researched this coolant and noted that it is an OAT coolant and not an SCA coolant. Became concerned that it would damage the sensors installed by Freightliner and cause an engine shutdown. Called the Freightliner Customer Assistance Center 1-800-385-4357 and related the concern. Was told that yes, the OAT coolant would damage the sensors and needed to be drained and replaced by SCA coolant. Called the Freightliner Oasis Service Manager and explained the problem. He said that he would research it and call me back. He did call me back and said that he had called his known contacts at the Freightliner Factory and had been told that the engine coolant needed to meet ASTM standard D6210 in order to meet all Freightliner requirements and that Fleetguard CC36077 ES Compleat EG OAT coolant did meet this standard. I was relieved but was somewhat bewildered by receiving such opposing positions so I called the Freightliner Customer Assistance Center back. It was clear that the Oasis Service Manager had called them. I was told that all of the Customer Assistance representatives had gotten together for a group meeting following the call from the Oasis Service Manager, discussed the issue and determined that Fleetguard CC36077 ES Compleat EG OAT coolant would not cause damage to the sensors installed in the cooling system. So after being told twice that it was okay and only once that it wasn't I felt more relieved.

I researched as you did as I wasn't sure what coolant I had after a flush and no written records. You definitely can mix coolants with no issues, however if you depend on SCA then test every 30K or yearly and add inhibitor as needed. I did then switch to OAT as it is currently the BAT.
