Does anyone know the scan tool that will work with the rectangle connector(s) under the dash for an 05 Cummins on a Spartan MM chassis? The coach is an 05 Newmar KSDP. The connector(s) under the dash are not OBD II. They are rectangular in shape.

Hi Jack R,
Thanks for the quick reply. If you know of something in the price range of an OBD II scan tool (about $100), please post here.

Exactly, that was his point. OBDII scan tools are cheap. But they don't work with the Cummins engine, and any scan tool that does is not cheap. He wants a cheap scan tool that works with the Cummins.
In the Cummins world, there are several expensive options. The SilverLeaf VMSpc, while not cheap, seems to be the least expensive option, and most popular.

SilverLeaf is great but dont forget about the Cummins PowerSpec software. It will let you read engine faults and trip data. It does not operate with the engine running as SilverLeaf does but at least you can see some info. All you need is the software and an adapter to go from your laptop to the diagnostic plug in the coach. I have both SilverLeaf and Cummins software and each has its place.

I just did some real quick research on this. From what I see it appears to be a free download, but needs to be licensed annually by contacting a Cummins Dealer. What is the license cost per year? And I don't see what type of adapter it needs or how much they cost.
Got any additional information?

Cummins has two software packages, Insite and PowerSpec. Insite if free to download but there is a cost to activate(please let me know if you find out how much). There is a lot of info even in the free download (manuals etc). The PowerSpec software if free to download and use, at least when I did. You will need a PC to coach diagnostic adapter, try looking at B-B Electronics if I remember correctly. You can also make your own connector if you prefer as diagrams are fairly available on the web.
Update - Sorry, Senior moment. You will also need a protocol converter, RS232 to J1708 to go between the PC and the engine. Check here http://www.bb-elec.com/bb-elec/liter...S-S_3906ds.pdf.

Then maybe things have changed? I've read in a couple different places (one being the PowerSpec Help Pages that once you download the PowerSpec software, you need to contact a Cummins dealer to obtain a license code, but there is no mention of the cost.
Those help pages also seem to indicate you need a Cummins RP1210 adapter and cables. A quick search shows that adapter to be significantly more expensive than the VMSpc. But then again, PowerSpec seems to do some interesting things that VMSpc doesn't.
What adapter do you use, the one from B&B? Perhaps their statement that you must use the Cummins adapter is just there to get you to by their expensive adapter rather than someone else's? If other adapters work, I wonder if the VMSpc adapter would work?

I use PowerSpec 3.5.0 with the B-B adapter, not issues. The SilverLeaf had a different plug configuration so I NEED to use their adapter. Since I have a serial port on my laptop I purchased a refirbed unit from SilverLeaf, about $200 I believe. PowerSpec lets you access SOME functions like trip info fault codes etc but you are correct to "unlock" all the features you need a key. That lets you change stuff in the ECM which I don't care about.
The cable was expensive also about $100 I believe - three years ago after a lot in internet searching.

After getting my VMSpc I found that the diagnostic exps are general in nature an although helpful I wanted more.
I am working on a spreadsheet that list the SPN and FMI codes from SilverLeaf and convert them to a Cummins Fault code. Once you know the fault code you can find fault description and troubleshooting info from Cummins.
I am using Cummins Quickserve. After having a free ID for a year I decided to upgrade to a paid ID. They have all manuals for a given Engine SN. It includes part numbers, repair and troubleshooting info.
They have an SPN/FMI converter to find fault codes or codes to SPN/FMI. It then links to Code information and further links to troubleshooting information. It also tells you if the code applies to your engine.
Haven't heard anyone post about this so I thought I would pass the info on.

Yes
The description you posted of a Cummins fault code is the same that I get from quickserve.
At the bottom of your code description it refers to a troubleshooting procedure. It is also available from quickserve.
But with the VMSpc it only shows the J1939 coding in SPN and FMI. You can covert these readings to a Cummins Fault code like you have in you post.
When I talked to Silverleaf about it they said they could not publish he Cummins code because it is propriatary. In other words you have to buy it. Cummins allows you to download the code sheets but they are marked as Cummins property.(Copyright Cummins INc.)

One more thing, On your Fault code 133 sheet it gives you an SPN and FMI. Unfortunately these may be wrong. The quick serve converter gives different values. I will eventually have these codes on my spreadsheet also with comments that they are probably invalid with J1939. Take some time to perfect it.
