Stuck oil filter

I have a 1997 cummins c8.3. I'm trying to change the oil and the oil filter will not budge. I'm using a strap wrench. Any ideas on getting it off and not damaging the filter In case I need to leave in place for now.

More torque... sometimes you just need to squish the filter if godzilla put it on too tight. In these situations, you need to make sure the old gasket comes off with the old filter, sometimes it will stick behind.

Another suggestion is to place the strap wrench as close to the base of the oil filter as possible. There is more of a tendancy to "twist" the filter, causing damage, the further the wrench is located towards the end of the filter. Get is as close as you possible can to the base where it makes contact with the filter mounting. Failing that, you may have to apply a little heat to the area.....very carefully though.

If the strap is slipping on the canister, put some sand paper under the stap

Folded piece of sandpaper in between strap and filter body has saved me in the past when strap was slipping. If not slipping, extend wrench handle with a small pipe to the extent you have room.

What type of strap wrench are you using? I have owned several over the years and the small cheap versions with built in handles do not work that well. I now have a strap wrench 2" wide strap that takes a 3/8" or 1/2" drive with an extension. This has removed the tightest of filters without damage.

You want this type of wrench and slip it up, onto the crimped seam of the filter.

Bring the new filter to the store for the best fit.

I have one like spk64 except mine has a 1&1/2 inch metal strap and has other people have stated get fight next yo the top of filter and it will not crush filter. Also make sure the motor is run up to temp filter comes of easier when hot.

My big problem was removing my coolant filter. Ended up with a 1/2" drive, 30" extension and a cheater bar over the ratchet handle. That and all 240# of my butt finally broke it loose.

My coolant filter took 2 very stout men, 1 from the top & 1 from the bottom, a large screwdriver driven through and an industrial strap wrench to remove. And some bad, bad language.

Yup. Don't fool around with a strap wrench, I have this style for the oil filter, fuel filters, and the oil filter for the generator. Well worth the $$

I thought it would be harder but it went great. I have a Fumoto on the pan. I had two 15 qt oil drain pans. I took to parts store and recycled the oil. Other then getting the filter off it was no different then a car.
