Time to remind owners to check coolant for DCA/SCA

A number of Cummins owners are having major problems with cavitation problems with wet sleeve liners on C, L, M and even X engines. Cummins diesel owners with these engines need to check their coolant with test strips to see if they have sufficient DCA ( Diesel Coolant Additive) also called SCA to protect their cylinder liners from cavitation which cause small holes in liners which lets coolant into cylinders. Make sure you know what coolant you have and that your engine is protected. This can be in 10K$ of damage.

Regardless of the fact that your friendly service shop of choice says they check DCA/SCA, you need to check this yourself. I learned a very expensive lesson the hard way about this.

Todd is the one right now dealing with this problem. It would be good for all to hear about what he is dealing with and how much it has cost him.

Make sure that the test strips are not expired. Last year I bought some from Bakersfield Ca Cummins that were already expired when they shoved them across the counter.

Cat engines other then C7 can also have cavitation issues too. With a diesel engine your coolant is more important then in gas engines because of the wet liners. The first thing is you need to know what coolant you have in your engine and then at least once a year check your coolant to make sure this cavitation concern isn't a problem on your engine. There are owners with 5 year old engines with less then 50K of have major damage done to their diesel engines.

Do click on Todd's Cummins issues and repairs to see what I am suggesting you need to know.

Did it - and also got my blackstone report...

Did two LONG trips (6400 miles total with an mpg of about 9.0 and ZERO oil use -).. Now If I get my inverter issues sorted out ill be golden.

Ok, so with my C7 I don't have to obsess over this issue. I can find enough others, like HEUI pump.

Finely got test strips, tested and found NO DCA. No way to find any information on it. 4 years ago it had a new Rad. tank and 2 gallon antifreeze only, started OK and set 4years. I bought from the owner last Oct. It had a rebuild transmission and new radiator installed at a local truck shop. Going to get them to drain a/f out and flush, then I'LL service it the way it should be done. 02 isc8.3 15K miles.

I had our ISC changed over to the extended coolant last year.

Why wouldn't you just change to an OAT coolant and eliminate the issue entirely?
