Type of Coolant

I have a Cummins ISL 400 HP diesel engine and have been getting very mixed opinions on what type, specifically, of coolant I should be adding to the rad reservoir when it gets a little low.

Any help would be appreciated. Our RV dealer says just add the red kind. I would like a bit more help than that.

What year is your ISL?

My ISL was built in late '06 and came with Cummins Fleetguard ES Compleat

Mine has FG Compleat ice blue color... OOps now you know that color is a poor indicator. Time to change aand put in Stuff that you know what is (extended life is best) so you will know what to add. Red stuff could be Shell ELC or CAT ELC but do you really want to bet an engine on it??? This is not an uncommon issue in the rv world. Just imagine that the builder used the cheapest stuff and having no eveidence to the contrary it's time to change.

The coolant did not come with the engine - it was added by the chassis builder when the engine was installed and should meet Cummins specs for coolant. Therefore there is no single "Cummins" answer, though Cummins has their own recommended brand and type.

If you drain the coolant and replace it, you can use any type that meets the Cummins spec, but if you are adding you want to try to use the same type as is already there. Other diesel coolant types are mostly compatible, but may not have the same characteristics as what you have. So, it is wise to know the chassis year and brand and inquire what coolant that chassis uses.

My 400 ISL on a Spartan chassis came with Final Charge. For more info on coolants check out RVcruzer.com - Coolants for HD Diesel Engines in RVs but if you are looking to add coolant, rather thabn replace it, your biggest factor will be finding out what kind of coolant is presently in your system. The color will be a big help - green, blue, red, pink, orangish-red?
