U joint/ drive shaft !

I havn't seen any one post any thing about the drive shaft on a pusher RV in the past several months.
How long should one last and do you grease it, or can you even grease it if Ya wanted to?
My 3/4 ton diesel truck has 100,000 miles on it and still going strong.
The pusher has 90K on it.
Whats been your experince?
Mike

Spartan says to grease the U-Joints and slip joint every year or 5,000 miles whichever comes first.

I grease mine about 4 times a year.

There are 2 zerk fittings on each u-joint and 1 for the slip joint. I pump grease until it comes out on both caps.

On the slip joint there is a screw on wiper/seal, I unscrew this and pump grease until it stars coming out of the slip joint.

I have ~99K on my 2002 Windsor, I decided to invest in spare U-joints that I carry as insurance. Mine is a common part but you never know when/if you may need it. Symptoms of a bad U-joint is vibration in the rear.

I grease the chassis 2 times per year, I have about 25 different zerk fittings with most being on the front.

Should that read, 50,000 miles?

No, 5,000 is correct. Spartan originally said 10,000 miles but then amended it to 5,000 or one year.

WRV recommend for the Alpine Coach every 3000 miles, which I follow. They recommend using N.L.G.I #2, Extreme Pressure grease.

I use a synthetic Red Tacky N.L.G.I #2, Extreme Pressure. Several manufacturers make this type of grease from Lucas Oil, Amsoil, Chevron, Shell and many more.

Mike that is one of the often overlooked maintenance item. I grease mine at least annually depending on miles driven.

Thanks for the input

I figured it was an overlooked item. I was surprised at the short time span grease needs to be added. I can see the need due to the extreme weight and torque load on the joints. I looked at mine back in July, what a beast! Ill grease it next week. Thanks to all that chimed in.

When you do be shure you get new grease out of every cap. If you don't you might need to remove it and clean and inspect. I wasn't getting grease out of 2 caps on the back so I went for a short drive and tried again. Fortunately I was to get new grease out of all of them so I didn't have to pull the driveshaft.

@ wildebill........I hope I'm so lucky. I would not want to have to remove that big steel dog bone. But.... If I have to I will. I've been a machinist/ mechanic all my life. I have the tools and the know how but I'd rather not work on it if I don't have to.

Yes it is a big dog bone I also can do the work but would rather be traveling. I was reading that it is a good reason to check your ride height to reduce un nessacary stress on the driveshaft. Hope you don't have a problem.

Spicer, the company that makes the U-joints says 5,000 on greaseable over the road bearings. Lots of potential damage if one lets loose...grease is cheap.

While you are under there take a center punch and mark shaft alignment then if you ever have to be towed it can be replaced correctly after removal for the tow.
