Use Cummins Under Warranty?

I need to have a full engine service on my '07 8.9/400 ISL in my Newmar Dutch Start. I'm in the Nashville area. I have found I might be able to save $100 or so by using a third party garage, but I'm thinking that while the drive train is still under warranty I'd be better off sticking with Cummins Crosspoint here in Nashville.

Any thoughts from you more experienced users? BTW, doing it myself is not an option. I don't know anything about engines, and don't have a facility.

I would use Cummins. To me, given the cost of a replacement engine, it's not worth $100 to give Cummins a potential loophole to squirm out of a warranty claim. That's why I spend the money to have my vehicles serviced at authorized facilities as long as they are under warranty. That way, inadequate service, failure to service, damage caused by untrained personnel during service, etc. can never enter the discussion should a warranty situation arise. Call the premium I pay for scheduled maintenance and service a risk management insurance premium, if you wish.

Hi BCook57,
Yep, have an authorized service center take care of your drive train. Consider this not only for when you are covered by a warranty, but whenever the drive train needs servicing. We are at a time in life when unplanned events should be kept to a minimum.

i have an 02 madp with 400 hp, ISL, all drivetrain service done by Cummins, Allison and Spartan. service costs more , but Cummins and Allison have service centers all around the country, not just local shops, they build them, let them fix and maintain them. peace of mind is worth any $ difference

hope this info helps;

Another vote for using them until the warranty has expired.

I'll disagree with the others, but only because most of what needs to be serviced is not under Cummins warranty anyway. The engine basically needs a regular oil & filter change, but most everything else that needs doing is a chassis part rather than an engine thing. Radiator, air filter, charge air cooler, hydraulics, fuel system filters, chassis lube, air dryer, rear axle lube, etc. are all non-Cummins items, so by the logic expressed here you should have the chassis manufacturer service them until they are out of waranty. And if your transmission is due for fluid change and filters, you might want that done at an Allison shop. It has a long warranty too.

Cummins does much care who does routine service like oil and filter changes. Now if you were talking about somebody actually working on the engine, I' say Cummins, hands down.

No need to go to a Cummins Dealer unless it is warranty related. I prefer Rv dealerships because they frequently service Rvs.

No need to go to Cummins for service. Past court cases have determined that a warranty cannot be voided by not using the "correct" maintenance facility (in this case, Cummins)as long as you can show proof that you have performed all maintenance as specified in the owners manual

I chose to go the Cummins route and I'm far better off than I would have been taking it somewhere else. They found I needed a Turbo, and two computer upgrades in two years. The turbo service bulletin called for re-clocking it's position, but after the removal they determined I needed a replacement, no problem as it was under warranty. They did a couple of other things that Cummins picked up the tab for, but I forget the details.

Cummins has all of my service records including SB's that are all up to date, no cost to me. They have all my Onan records too, which included a new oil pan they found defective on the very first genny service. I'm so happy they found it and replaced under warranty, .... I'm not sure how that would have played out if a local shop had been working on it. They genny needs complete removal to replace the oil pan and having them pick up the tab made me a happy camper.

I'll probably have this coach for quite a long time and believe it's in my best interest to go to Cummins every other year minimum. But I will probably just continue to have Cummins do my service so they will have a complete record of everything found including SB's.

To each his own, .. but that's how I do mine.

Add my vote for using either Cummins or Frieghtliner. Not so much for the $ savings but for the value I perceive their intimate knowledge of my chassis adds.

Crosspoint in Nashville has some good people. I know many of them and have worked with them in my job as a field service engineer for Cummins Filtration (Fleetguard) here in Cookeville, TN.

You can get Cummins qualified service from a lot of OEM dealers who are authorized by Cummins to do warranty repairs. Whether it is Crosspoint or an OEM dealer, they both have to contact Cummins Rapid Serve for guidance on warranty and troubleshooting issues. If you have issues with an Onan generator, only take it to Cummins.
