visual difference between c and ISC 8.3

Can a person with some knowledge of diesel engines (we have 3208 cats in a boat) visually determine if it is a C 8.3 or a ISC 8.3. What should I look for besides a tag somewhere on the engine. Some owners I have found don't know which they have. Thanks

The ISC went into production in March of '98. All the ISCs I have seen have "ISC" embossed on the front cover of the engine.

A 1998 Monaco Dynasty probably has the older 8.3 because it is probably a 1997 Chassis. Would that be a vaild possible assumption? Thanks

Maybe less so with Monaco. Since Monaco owned Roadmaster and the chassis were built in the same production facility, they did not tend to have a big inventory of chassis. On the roadside wall at the drivers seat there should be a chassis data tag that might have a date. Of course the Cummins engine could have been in inventory a while.

The easiest way to tell the difference is every C8.3 I have ever seen has been all black. Every ISC 8.3 has been all red, or black with a red head.

That would be the first clue, then you're back to looking at the timing gear cover which others have said, will have ISC stamped on it if it's an ISC. Finally looking at the data plate (on the top edge of the timing gear cover) will tell you for sure.

BTW... This color does not apply to Marine engines. They are painted per customer specs. Mercruisers all black. OMC. all white.

I have never seen an all red ISC installed in a coach. Those I have seen are all black. Mine is all black plus it says "ISC" in the front of the engine.

The ISL is black block with red valve cover

My ISL was all red.

It seems the only thing consistent in the RV industry is it's inconsistency.

While the location is the same the CAP looks different the the C pump. I haven't seen a common rail setup but I'm sure it looks different too.

my ISC is redish orange
and has a big ISC embossed on the valve cover
ISC also has a ton of sensors the conventional engine is missing
and a big ECM box on the left side of the engine by the injector pump

but as for color??????
i have seen cats and cummins as blue, black, white and red in boats

my boat days most were white so leaks would show up better, or so we were told

red in a rv?
