This is for certain ISC engines. It is called the RV Engine Exhaust Uplift Campaign. What they do is replace the original muffler with something about 3 times as large and does not have the straight flow through design as the original muffler. Anytime one brings a campaign eligible engine to a Cummins authorized service center, campaign 0925 will be installed, with or with the owner's approval/knowledge.
I have lost 6/10 MPG since campaign 0925 was installed. This is over 2.2K miles and on roads I am very familiar with and have driven many times. I guess I can take come consolation that my coach now complies with 2005 EPA emissions.
If you have an engine that qualifies for this campaign, be careful before taking it to a Cummins authorized service center. If I had to do it again I would have delayed my visit to an authorized Cummins service center to a date in the future,,,,,, way, way, way in the future.

Gary,
Thanks for the heads up . I recieved the letter a couple of weeks ago and have been waiting to find out more about it. When I called Cummins they told me that all they had to do was change out the muffler .
By your calculations everything I did to increase my MPG would be giving back for a larger muffler .

our isc engine has no muffler, but it does have a HUGE DPF , is that what they put on your rig?
looks like a small 55 gal drum with four thermo couples and a fuel line

powerboatr...
The DPF will be found on diesel engines built after January 1, 2007. In other words... a coach may have been built in May of 2007 - but the engine could be an engine built in 2006 - hence - it would not have a DPF.
Your coach is a 2008 with either a 2007 or 2008 engine.

Hi Robert,
No, what is pictured is not what was put on my coach. On my coach, the original muffler was removed. It was replaced with another stand alone unit. It connects to nothing but the exhaust pipe. It is about 3 times the size (diameter) and a little longer than the original muffler. My layman's view is it's as close to a catalytic converter as one can get. Before they installed it, I inspected it the best I could. Each end has a baffle at the opening. I was told the exhaust must go through a chamber after chamber maze to get through this device. The exhaust is now much quieter than with the straight through original muffler. This new thing is much more than a muffler. Cummins calles it an after treatment unit. The details remain a mystery to me.

This is an update. I just finished the fall trip. A little over 4K miles over 2 months. The 6/10 MPG reduction remains valid. It has been very consistent since this campaign was installed. I am disappointed with Cummins for jamming, what is most likely, the cheapest fix they could come up with down my throat with no regard for customer satisfaction or additional customer cost. This will cost me $s every time I drive the coach.

I can't imagine why Cummins would make a modification on your 2005 exhaust unless it was a safety issue. The 2007 emissions standards don't apply to your rig. I assume that you have asked lots of questions and have been told that the mod was for emissions. If so I would be ticked if they did the mod without my approval and I got less MPG.

The other possibility is that engines certified to the 2005 emission standards were not in compliance - they were "overpolluting" in actual service. In such a case, the EPA can (and has) force(d) the manufacturers to bring the engines into compliance.

Sounds to me like Rusty is right on. Cummins wouldn't be spending the money to make it a "Greener" engine unless someone was holding their feet to the fire.

Rusty nailed it. The only reason for the campaign is that my engine did not meet 2005 emissions. Gut feel says Cummins knew about this and fought it (quietly behind the scenes) and lost. It took the gov't. attorneys this long to get the settlement.

Hi Gary
I was at the Cummins dealer last week for an "emissions test" This is a requirement when renewing License plates, every 2 years.
Rig passed,No problem (emissions were quite Low) nothing was said about Campaign 0925 and I did not say anything.
So I am good for another couple of years or maybe different Regs here in the Great White North!!!

Hi Rick,
Good for you. Canada and the USA must have different rules for 05 models. In any case it's too cold for me to join you. Below 70F I get cold.
