Driving normally. Warning light appears followed shortly by Stop light. Engine goes to derate followed by shutdown.

Engine and cooling system fluid/filters changed this fall with <500 miles on them. Checked all levels oil pressures good. Fuel level at 1/4 tank. So I think I am a dummy and have run it out of fuel. :bang head:

It restarts and quits two more times. I get it to a filling station and fill, no more problems. I mange fuel pretty well and miles were low ~550 on a fill, so I am perplexed. Runs fine with additional fuel stops, 1200 miles. Stop to fill tank at 1/2 tank and 550 miles, I am still a bit spooked. On my way and 1 mile later same symptoms. I finally get it to a Cummins shop, Southeast Power Tampa. They diagnose an oil pressure sensor bad. It requires a sensor, a wiring harness and an ECU update. ~$400. Turns out I am 31 revisions behind on the ECU.

Cummins has a nice facility, free wireless, they service a lot of MH's and are near Lazydays. BTW Lazydays does not have the diagnostics for a Cummins. My cats even liked the waiting area. Hope to be on the road shortly.

I hope this helps someone.

Did they ask to install the ecm updates or did they just install them?

Hi Coma,
Iron Man has an excellent question. I'll go a step farther and say if you have a choice, do not get the ECM updates. Been there & done that. For me, in the future, if it's not broke I don't fix it.

GaryKD, I'm wondering why you would opt out of haveing the updates. I have an outstanding update on mine and your post has caused me pause.

It was presented this way. The sensor had failed, the fix was a switch. In order for the ECM to process the new logic it had to be updated. I agree, I don't like to fix things that aren't broken. New ECM logic is, for me, unknown territory. Since the old sensor sent a range of info and the new one sends either good or bad I didn't feel I had a choice. The old sensor read 103psi with the engine not running. Also, I felt as this is almost a 12 year old motor that even the latest update would be fairly mature, of course I've been wrong before. Sooooo....... we'll see how it goes.

Would there be anything to be done at this point. My understanding is there are no undo's for ECM's.

I found out that sometimes they say it's the sensor when all it is is an update, usually for the low coolant level sensor. And,yes ,you can undo a update. Whoever did it should have kept a file with the original ECM image. The InCal DVD's have only the latest update on them, and the DVD's or only good for 6 months. There is a work around it though. If you have the ECM code (something like AG20214.09) you can use Cummins MS excell spreadsheet to see what changes are and what is the latest.

Can't upload it for you due to 11mb file size

ECM from J90210.17 to J90908.16, does that sound right? I checked and new part and wire installed.

That's not right. Updates don't change the original # it's the sub that changes. Like ah220214.09 to ah220214.28. If they changed the first set they changed the whole code, not updated old code.

Look's like that's what they did Here's the codes and updates. They know more than I do.

Both codes still give you the same HP and Torque.
350HP at 2000RPM
1050 torque at 1400RPM.

FWIW the last three fill ups have given me 9.2/9.2/ 8.7 MPG over 1600 miles running at 67 mph. While certainly not definitive, I'm encouraged.
