Warranty Issue

I have a 2013 Tiffin Phaeton, Cummins engine with around 48,000 miles.

Within the past month I replaced the EGR cooler. Subsequently I started getting low engine coolant warnings. I took the rig to a Freightliner dealer in Columbus, Ohio.

They told me there was coolant in the engine oil and that they were going to look at the head gasket. Subsequently the sent the entire head to Cummins for testing. The found no issues with the head gasket or the head.

Today they called me and told me that there was cavitation of 3 of the cylinder liners which they said was due to "improperly maintained cooling system".

In checking the Cummins recommended maintenance for Cummins ISC8.3 engine, Operation and Maintenence Manual, the first coolant system flush is listed at 60,000 miles.

At 28,000 miles the cooling system was pressure tested and no leaks were found. At 37,000 miles top to bottom preventive maintenance was performed. At 47,000 mile I had top to bottom preventive maintenance done by Freightliner prior to a planned trip. No issues ever mentioned with coolant of any kind.

Cummins is saying they will not warrant the repair. My Good Sam extended warranty is stating they will not cover the repair. Am I missing something here?

You should continue to pressure Cummins to answer what you didn't and or did to cause this problem. Have some Cummins contacts that if you private message me I will share with you.

About every 3rd annual service for my coach, the test on the coolant says "add the additive" to prevent cavitation.
Did you have those tests?

With the cavitation noted, Cummins is likely saying "improperly maintained cooling system" based on DCA (Cummins-speak for SCAs) required in the coolant. Been there done that, this despite appropriate interval service at Freightliner and Cummins service centers and they *all* note in the service notes that they checked DCA/SCA.

SCAs turn out to be critical in wet sleeve diesel engines.

Be happy to chat, drop me a PM.

Who replaced the EGR cooler???

If you weren't having problems before this was done I would suspect a problem with this causing coolant to get into the oil.

Did you replace the EGR cooler because it was leaking coolant into the engine?

Can you send me a cummins contact person email address?

I have written a letter but don't know who to send it to.

Unfortunately it's pretty easy for Cummins to prove the maintenance wasn't done. Unfortunately it's also almost impossible for an owner to prove it was done properly.
Liners will only perforate if the SCA's aren't kept up to the proper level.
Did the OP test the concentration every 6 mo. and add DCA as required?
