I don't get over here often, but I need a little help with an explanation anyway please. Tell me what happened?
Coming from the National in Virginia the other day, running with the cruise control on. I noticed the MH slowing down and losing power. I added power with the accelerator and managed to get it on the far right lane. The engine would not rev up. I looked at the information window and saw a message. "shut engine down" and to the right of that, a green symbol that appeared to be something like a cloud or perhaps wind blowing a cloud (poor description I know )
I got it on the shoulder and shut it down. Then waited for a couple of minutes, trying to figure what to do. We were pretty close to traffic and I decided to get further over. Started it up and the message was gone and the engine revved as it always does. It has not repeated this and it runs just fine.
Engine is a 425 Cummins in a Freightliner chassis 2008 Damon with a 6 speed Allison.

Any number of thing could be wrong, you need to know if the ECM has stored any fault codes from the issue, a trip to a Cummins ,F/L dealer is in order. Could be as simple as a faulty sensor , throwing the engine into protect mode, or an ECM programing fault. I've heard of altitude related , no power issues that required re-programing the ECM. Get it checked out, a short cool down may not be enough, the next time this happens.

While waiting to get it checked out...if you have the owners manual...check it and see what the "cloud" and the " shut engine down" descriptions are...That way you don't go in for repair not having some sort of idea

Doc, is this the cloud you saw?
If so, it was probably telling you that your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is partially clogged and that the engine wants to be put into Regeneration mode.
This may help:

Hope this helps.

x2 regen cycle
but i thought the 425 didnt have a dpf...but i have slept since i looked at one up close
on my tuscany.....you can REALLY feel when it goes into regen when i pulling the hauler......power drops off a bit and lasts 3-5 minutes....
then I have power back.
somewhere in the harness under the dash there is a regen switch that can be used to put the engine in a regen cycle while you sit idling.....
i have looked for mine and never found it....but have been told over and over its there.

That is exactly the symbol I saw. I have not looked at the manual. So, was this normal?

Yep.
I would suggest you continue driving or at least drive to a safe area with preferably concrete under the exhaust area and let the motor run. The exhaust temperature gets " HOT".
There is a chapter in your manual regarding regeneration.
Here is a link to another iRV2 thread.

Is it possible that you go only part of the message, from the message center, and it said; DO NOT shut engine down? ECM's don't like to have the re-gen cycle interrupted.

No. not normal. The regen cycle should happen every 2500 miles or so, and really shouldn't effect anything. It certainly shouldn't have the system telling you to shut the engine down.

I guess if you drive around the in the neighborhood but I've driven over 35,000 miles and its regenerated twice. I don't do much idling and very little stop and go driving.
