2002 Cat 3126

I can't keep the back of my motorhome clean nor my trailer I tow. Seems like sooty/oiley residue is being ejected from my tail pipe. I think my fuel is not being completely burnt. Engine runs great and seems to have ample power. I have a Winnebago Journey 39'.
Any ideas folks ??
Thx

Is this a new problem or always been there?

Is there any chance your overfilling the engine oil?

Have you lengthened the slobber tube that comes out of your valve cover so that it's closer to the ground?

Is the inside of your exhaust pipe dry or wet with oil?

As above, CAT mod......extend the slobber tube out the back and low. Rook

a:New problem over past 5000 miles has increased.
b:Engine oil level is good.
c:I'll check in the morning and respond, but if it was the sober tube wouldn't it have been an ongoing problem which it wasn't.
d:inside of tail pipe appear sooty not generally oily.

Thanks

You will get Diesel Soot on the R/S of your trailer-- More Prevalent in rain = Normal !
If your getting Blow BY Soot --- That's not abnormal either, you just need to manage it . Install a Slobber Tube Kit !

If the tailpipe is not oily but the toad is oily .... good news. It's not coming from inside the exhaust system.

It's my understanding that not all dipsticks are calibrated correctly . Are you doing your own oil changes? Is it possible someone else overfilled it?

You might try running the oil level on the ADD mark instead of the FULL mark and see what results You get.

Also you might pull the breather apart on top of your valve cover where the slobber tube connects. look around in there for any clues

The sober tube is just above my trailer hitch.. I had a friend suggest to put a wool sock over the end of the tube allowing air to pass yet collect oil.. Any concerns or suggestions ?

I would not cover the end of the slobber tube. You want as much airflow as possible, and a sock is going to reduce airflow.

Is there oil dripping from the slobber tube?

I would think that that line and bottle is a bit small for the flow, but if it works for you....I used an upside down paint thinner can with a vent hose as big as the slobber tube.

The dirt problem is simple aerodynamics. The backs of RVs and box trailers create a vacuum and trailing vortices that bring road dirt and diesel soot and deposits them on the rear surfaces. Not to mention that massive cooling fan sucking all the dust off the road and blowing it out the back.

Diesels produce soot when heavily loaded. Even over a single day's drive you'll get a lot of dirt on the back.

Are you using the correct amount of oil in the engine ??

Many , MANY , posts on the dipstick full level being WRONG and requiring re-calibrating to prevent excess slobber .

other than slobber how would one know if the oil is over full ?

Petesflhtk,
The issue with overfilling a CAT engine primarily derived from the introduction of the C-7 CAT. On about 99.999% of the RVs equipped with the C-7, 300HP, 330HP and 350HP versions, the engines came with a steel, smaller oil pan. The C-7s equipped with that pan, take a maximum amount of 19 quarts of oil, including any by prefilling the filter. The other pan was an aluminum one and, it takes either 21 or 22 quarts, can't remember.

But, I'm not an expert on the 3126 so, I'm not sure just exactly how much they should take. Probably the same amount, 19 quarts but, I wouldn't go by me or anyone else on here that is GUESSING. I'd go by either a call to CAT or, maybe Freightliner or, find something that lists your engine serial number and, has specs for just EXACTLY how much oil ( with prefilling of the filter) that your engine takes.

Many C-7s came from the factory with improperly marked dipsticks. And, the improper markings lead to overfilling which, lead to the EXACT SAME circumstances you're experiencing. There's been multiple threads about the C-7s dipstick re-marking and re-calibrating. Not too much on the 3126.

But, before you go taking all kinds of major steps to alleviate this situation of yours, I'd definitely find out, just EXACTLY how much oil your engine is supposed to have and, make sure that, THAT is how much is presently in it. Then, you can move on to other measures. Good luck.
Scott

Can you check your invoice and see how many liters they charged you for ?

My 3126B with steel pan has a capacity of 19 US quarts, to get to the full mark on the dip stick required 21 1/2 US quarts. ( the amount of slobber onto the toad was ......) The original add mark is my full.

BTW, 19 US quarts = 18 l , if you have a steel oil pan and the shop installed more than 18l , chances are your overfull.
