2003 C12 505 PTO Problem?
I just purchased this 2004 Intrigue with the big Cat and was wondering if this engine has the "Dry PTO". Seems like I read that it was not dry PTO and the pump was mounted to the engine not trans. Thanks! -Danno

Here's a quick check to see if yours is engine driven. i.e. Wet/dry issue is moot if it's engine driven like the one in the picture.

Thanks everybody. Engine driven. One less thing to worry about!

Are you sure? That pump on my C13 is the fuel pump. I would crawl under the motorhome and look in the passenger side of the transmission and see if there is a large pump hanging off the side.

Just looked it up, I am pretty sure that is the fuel transfer pump. Follow the hoses and see where they lead you.

I'll do that. I looked when I changed the hydraulic oil filters in the reservoir last year. I had the same question that Dan does and satisfied myself that it does not have the transmission PTO. Both by looking and by information provided by techs.
Also, I looked up my transmission on the Allison website and it said no PTO.
I'll double check. The last thing I want to do is pass out bum dope.

I crawled under it and there is a big pump mounted on the passenger side of the engine which feeds the steering and fan. I believe this question is answered.
Thanks guys.

Thanks, Dan, for checking. I apologize for any misinformation posted earlier. I'm still satisfied that we do not have a "dry PTO" problem. I asked about that during the pre-delivery-inspection and was told that this CAT-Allison configuration as implemented by Country Coach did not have that problem. Unfortunately I did not pay close enough attention when they explained the hydraulic oil pump configuration.
Thanks also to slemnah for pointing out the location of the fuel transfer pump. I went to CAT Parts Online and verified that he is correct about that.

Thanks
Hey Dave, How has that C12 treated ya? Mine was built in 2003 and is the "bridge engine", hence it had some high EGT issues. Computer reported a few High Coolant Temp warnings at 223. I had the ECM re-flashed with latest fuel mappings and it seems to be right now. Have you had any issues?
I just took the first 1000 mile trip in this coach and love that torque cruising up the hills! 65-70 running 200-210.
Thanks,
Dan

We did have a problem with the radiator fan running on high all the time. Not really a CAT problem but a Sauer-Danfoss problem with a bad air intake sensor. That covered up a sticky thermostat (regulator in CATspeak).
After the fan started cycling properly the engine coolant temp would oscillate between 180 and 210 going down a flat road at a constant speed. Changed out the thermostat/regulator and now it hovers around 193. It will go up some while pulling a hill but the highest I've seen it go is 205 on a long grade.
At the moment, all's good. We're going to AZ twice in the next 6 months and if it behaves like it has in the last two trips to AZ, all will remain good.
Hope yours continues to behave well.
Best,

I have a C-9 Cat and my temps run between 194 and 204deg and no problem with my Sourer-Danfoss hydraulic fan drive controller yet, so I will be going down to Source Engineering first part of next year and having wax valve installed. I talked to Jim at the Albany Rally and it is about a 2-3hr install.

Coco Dave, I believe it was mainly the Country Coaches that had the dry PTO problem. Here is a picture of the end of my PTO pump hanging off the side of the transmission. Mine mounts on the passenger side although I believe you can have it mounted on either side as the Allison will have covers and mounting brackets for PTO on both sides if my memory is correct. The PTO and pump is the dark circular part with the hose going to it.

Finally got an opportunity to look at the transmission. As I thought, there is no PTO.
Could not get far enough under it to locate the pump on the engine since the air is dumped and I'm not going to start the engine just to check this. However, I will be starting the engine next week to get the coach out and change generator oil. That will provide an opportunity to look underneath for the engine-driven hydraulic oil pump.
Near as I can determine, this dry PTO problem did not arise until the 2005 model year, so it's just academic for those of us with pre-2005 coaches.
