There is a member, FIREUP, who if memory serves me correctly pulled his radiator, etc. You might send him a private message and ask about pulling the rear cap but I don't think he needed to.

Your right Bob! FIREUP did pull his radiator to replace it with a new one without removing the rear cap. If the radiator is removed, it's also a great time to replace the fan drive bearing.

Sounds like the radiator needs a good cleaning. Search this forum for CAC and rear radiator cleaning. If you have access to a hose and some Dawn dish washing soap, you may be able to clean it enough to get to a better location. Usually pulling the radiator is NOT necessary. I cut a 8x8 hole in the top of my fan shroud to access the front of the radiator and the back of the CAC so I could give it a deep cleaning. I then placed a sheet metal cover on it with a gate hinge and used rivets to attach.
Also make sure the "blow by tube" has been extended pass the radiator. All of these topics can be found on this website.
good luck!

Well I cleaned it real well about 2000 miles ago. I don't think it could get dirty that fast, especially since I can't se any sign of blowback behind the blowout tube. However, I like your idea about making an access port in the fan shroud. I will work on that after I limp home.

I was thinking you may need to check the water pump belt. It could be loose or damaged. It is separate from the serpentine belt system. I had one go south on my 3116 cat. (Company Truck). Didn't even know it was there.

Loose Fan belt. The heavier the load the belt can slip and cause the fan not to spend as fast.
You have Alternator, AC compressor, Hyd pump all being driven by that same belt

BINGO!!! Fixed the overheating problem on my 2002. Temps ran 186 to 200 climbing the CO passes after replacement.

Great that you resolved it. Bad or loose belt I presume?

Bob, I don't think the OP fixed his problem yet. The post your replying to is another guy.

I thought I would give everyone who commented an update and also ask a follow up question.
At a campground I did my best to degrease my radiator for the second time in a year and got a lot of gunk out. I also extended the slobber tube. The remaining 1000 miles of the trip went fine with no overheating issues. I am now back home and decided to do a more complete radiator cleaning, including cutting an access hole in the fan shroud. I also decided to change the oil and calibrate the dipstick following the cat manual instructions. During this process I noticed they want me to put in 22 quarts. (23 if you factor my 2 quart filter).
I have read in multiple postings on this forum that caterpillar had an error in the book in late 2004 and early 2005 c7 and the correct level should be 19 quarts. This makes sense to me based on my experience and blow by, but would like to see the information from Cat firsthand before I re-mark the dipstick and start running my engine with a gallon less oil. I've spent hours looking for such a bulletin and can't find it.
Can anyone reassure me that no harm will come from dropping the oil level to 19 quarts? Direct me to the documentation on this?
Thanks as always for all your sage advice!

flaresadog, I have read this too and 19 qts is what I always used. As I recall, it has something to do with the engine tilt in a motorhome otherwise 22 in a truck. Never had a problem with my CAT 3126E.

flaresadog, 19 quarts is right. Our rig was bought brand new. When we had the oil changed for the first time I had a Cat shop do it and had them calibrate it for 19 quarts. I have never had the radiator plugging up from the slobber tube problem. I still was the radiator out once a year though. Road grime will also do the same thing that oil will.
