2005 C13 Questions
I am looking at a 2005 Country Coach with a CAT C13 engine. Can anyone tell me about the engine? Problems to look out for (was this one of the more troublesome, or so I have heard, ACERT engines)? What should I do in a pre-purchase inspection? Other issues I should know about or check for? All help is appreciated.
Thanks!

You might call the Cat Hot Line to see if anything has been done to the coach at a Cat shop 1-877-777-3126 and have your motor S/N in hand.
Also check to see if it has the wet PTO and if the radiator has been replaced with a Steel and Copper rad.
Other things to look at is to replace the air dryer and trans filters. See if it has good records, I change my motor oil every 5000mi and send in an oil sample to Peterson Cat because of the HEUI pump, it likes clean oil.
Good luck.

2 Stroker, Do you do your own work or do you have a favorite Service place for your CAT. We are not located that far from you.

You will find many opinions from well meaning folks repeating things they have read or heard, but few C-13 owners complaining.
Mine has 50,000 miles and the worst problems I've had have been corrosion eating a hole in the coolant filter, and the same with the exhaust cross over under the engine. I drive mine a fair bit in winter up north, and the crap they put down to reduce ice is not friendly to metal.
Lots of torque, reasonable fuel mileage, loves to climb in the mountains, the engine brake makes descending worry free, and it doesn't mind working hard in hot weather.

One other point, the C-13 doesn't use a HUEI pump, contrary to 2-Stroker's recommendation. It is used in the C-9 he has.

I just found out myself. Was having the oil changed at a Cat dealer in Monroe WA, and the tech mentioned that I didn't have to worry as much about oil change frequency because I didn't have the HUEI pump, which are very sensitive to oil (and I think fuel) quality.
Came as a surprise to me.

2x on the KCB series C13 in a 2005. Absolutely no issues in 72K miles. Fuel economy is 5.5MPG, the only downside. Pulls up mountains with good speed.

I love the way it pulls mountains. I set my cruise at about 62 and then enjoy the view. I usually hit the peak around 48mph. The only thing I worry about is if I have to disengage the cruise and lose my rpm's and even then I can still slowly gain speed over time. Sure beats my old motorhome pulling the grapevine at around 20mph and always worrying if it was going to overheat.

slemnah - I had read about the grapevine and wondered what it was like. I've never entered Socal that way. Until this year. I've driven mine all over the Rockies and other Western ranges, but this year I took it both ways on fairly warm days. Never went over 200, and maintained pretty good speed. Fuel economy wasn't impressive, but she kept up a good pace.
Having said that I lost one of the heater hoses going to the AquaHot in the middle of San Diego and dumped 13 gallons of coolant on the I805!

Any idea why so low? Even our 14.9L ISX gives us 7.6 overall.

No, haven't figured it out yet. It just appears that the engine is a fuel hog. No matter what I have tried it still gets around 5.4. I have had all the latest ECM reflashes, the valves were adjusted at the correct time, there are no codes in the ECM, there fan isn't running at full speed and I am not getting any smoke out of the tailpipe.
