3126 HUEI pump replacement

Has anyone replaced their HUEI pump? If so, what are the steps. Thanks.

I assuming this question is in reference to the C7 engine. The procedure is not that difficult however if you're asking for guidance to perform this from this forum only, and don't have the proper repair manual, you're setting yourself up for a big failure.

Please get the manual and read it first. Then you can decide if the repair is within your capabilities. Cat engines don't fare well from mistakes made by unqualified repair efforts.

Please don't take that as an insult. But it can end up costing you dearly. Having a Cat shop do the work will give you some backup if something goes wrong.

Understand. Thanks. Many on this site are DIY. Yes, the job is not like replacing a typical fuel pump as has both fuel and oil connections, and how do bleed it? But I want to know if anyone has done it DIY. I went to CAT to get the quote (part is $950+250 core charge) and a $5 o-ring. Labor is $2K. So this discussion is to consider the DIY option. How do get hands on the CAT repair manual is a good question. My 2002 is a 3126B per the s/n I provided CAT.

I read the manual and the replacement of the hydraulic pump does not seem to be to difficult for a DIYer. My guess is that included in the additional labor is checking the HEUI injectors and making sure the ECM is programmed correctly. You may want to check with CAT to see what the reason for the $2K in labor costs are before you begin. Use that information to consider if just replacing the hydraulic pump will solve your problem. JMHO and no intention to insult your mechanical ability.

Did it on my 2003 Journey, well a Cat teck that my son knew did it. I'am very mechanical and wouldn't attempt it. First of all you need a special Cat tool to remove one of the lines. Looks like a U-shaped pry bar. 2K sounds way out of place since it should only take a few hrs. I removed the bed and engine covers before he started. Next thing that went was the fule pump thats inside the Huei pump now that was definatley not a job for you, the pump has to be held together with a bolt supplied or it will fly apart and you'll never get it back together again. I guess I'am lucky I have this young guy that works for a large heavy equiptment repair outfit in my pit crew.

A little over two years ago I paid CAT to have the huei pump and six injectdors replaced. Apparently the pump released metal particals into the injectors. So the pump, injectors and labor was over $7000. I had a service program and never saw the invoice so I don't know how much was labor & how much was parts. I'd speculate they spent maybe 15 to 20 hours actually working on the repair.

If the pump has failed there is a good chance-very common- it has generated metal and contaminated the high pressure rail in the cylinder head. The replacement of the pump often includes the removal on the valve cover and removal of the injectors to allow the flushing of the high pressure rail to remove the metal. Removal and installation of the pump and the injectors is not difficult - nor the flushing of the rail. But you must install the injectors back into the cylinder/position they were removed from. You will need to purchase new seals for the injectors.
Are you sure you have a pump problem? There are sensors that could be causing the HEUI pump to malfunction and they are alot cheaper and easier to replace.

Can you share the link since it is not in the Sticky that I could find.

Also, I spelled HUEI wrong - it is HEUI.

Thanks

My fuel delivery issue was solved by both a fuel filter and an oil change. As many have posted already, the HEUI is hyper-sensitive to the quality of the oil. My oil was neither old nor anywhere near the recommended mileage change, but the oil replacement seemed to have solved the problem. I did 400 miles over the weekend, 1st 100 miles still seemed like the motor was not 100%, but after that felt fully back to normal. No check engine lights and good power. The constant high pressure cycling of the oil in the HEUI pump (3000 psi) must help wear it out.
