3126B Oil Pressure
Our Winnebago 2000 UA 40J has 110,000 miles on it, my oil pressure at idle seems to be low to me as I have those gauges that have Low Normal and High on them, what is a normal oil pressure at idle as I would think it should be around 35 to 40 can any of you give me some reading.
My gauge is just a little lower than half way between normal and low at idle.
I just ordered a Scan Gauge and after it comes I will have some oil pressure reading.
Thanks Tom

Tom,
That oil pressure at idle is just fine, keep in mind the 3126B will not run without oil
pressure as it is used to run the injectors i.e. no oil pressure no fuel can be injected to run the engine.

An accurate oil pressure gauge for the 3126B Cat engine is useless because the electronics will automatically shut down the Cat 3126B engine if the oil pressure drops to an unsafe level.

I just dug back in my files and the spec's for a 3126 B low idle oil pressure is 18 psi.
Also the gauges used are what I call feel good gauges by no means accurate.

Agree totally with that. For example, my temp gauge is always just a hair above "low" when it is at the normal operating temp, even though my scangauge confirms that it is right at 184-186 degrees. By the time it gets to "normal", I'm at 210 or so, which is not "normal" for my engine.
I think my idle oil pressure is usually around 30-35, and maybe 55-60 when driving.
Good to know that the engine won't run if the oil pressure is too low.

If you saw the oil pressure out of the high pressure oil pump feeding the injectors it would scare you to death as it is several hundred pounds.
Spec's call for 870 to 3,300 psi

I like it as it provides information that alerts you to a problem.
I set it up to show transmission temp, engine temp, alt output, intake air temp.
I also have another gauge that shows boost pressure and exhaust temp.

lets keep in mind here that we are taking a digital signal and converting it to an analog gauge, idle oil pressure will depend on how fresh the oil is, how hot the oil is, my 3126b in my truck fully warmed up can show at 25 psi on my gauge at idle, and i have 25,000 mile on it, BTW the scan gauge will unlock about 30 other different functions that you didn't even know you could monitor, now I want to get a second scan gauge and stack them up

For less than the price of 2 ScanGaugeDs you can buy a VMSpc by SilverLeaf Electronics: VMSpc | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc.

I like my scangauge. It can give a wide range of detailed information, most of which I don't need, but some which is nice. I particularly like to be able to monitor fuel economy.
I actually got it because my freightliner instrument panel sometimes craps out temporarily, either freezing up or going to 0. This is a common problem with that era FL. With the scangauge, I've got a backup speedometer if that happens.
I thought about the VMSpec, but it is a bit more of an investment and I would need either a laptop or tablet on the dashboard.

Seems! low oil pressure is a common thing with the 3126 cat , i had 2 3126's both ran about 11 or 12 psi at idle after the engine warmed up 18 to 20 cold.

The engines have to meet the min 18 psi at normal engine operating temp or the engine does not leave the factory.
I have found amount other things who makes the oil and its type can effect oil pressure
a great deal.
