I read the old threads and found them usefull and glad I did. Someone listed the number for cat so I called and spoke with a gentleman that told me about the 19qt (newer engines) and the 22 qt (older), but what else he told me I didn't see anywhere. So hopefully somone else out there may have the 1% as he told me I have that my coach has the deep pan which hold 30qt. The way you tell is by looking at the outside of the pan and the smooth sides are the shallow and the ribbed is the deep.

You probably have the 22qt pan. To be sure, pre fill your oil filter and use the rest of your 19qt in the crank case. Start your engine, let it idle a few mins. shut it off and let the oil settle back into the pan and check the dip stick. It will probably be 2qts low. Some people say to run it with 19qts to prevent oil mist out the breather tube. Thats not the best idea. You can use a catch can for that.

My book for 3126b/ 99 lists and pictures only the 2 pans 19/22qt. When testing oil level after start up wait 1 hour after running the engine to get the most accurate reading. When topping up oil, without running, wait 20 min.assuming you have the same timing cover fill tube as I do; if your adding through the valve cover wait another hour. to avoid overfilling.
15/40 oil doesn't go anywhere fast.

For my 99 which was one of the very last ones made in 99 year model, its 20 with filter. When I first had it serviced at Elkhart Freightliner, they wrote 20 quarts with filter right on panel above the dipstick . They knew what yellow to write with as its still there, just as day they wrote it.

On the earlier series there was a recall for new dipsticks with correct marking but not for mine. There was a long discussion on these groups and in Freightliner seminars at FMCA about the quantity for fill and dipstick markings. Anyway, I have been happy, in 12 years they put in 20 quarts when servicing and its at the correct point on my dipstick.

In all the years, I have never had to add any oil between serviceings even on hot runs across the mountains and all over the place.

I finally got around to changing my oil and after draining the old I poured in the new first 5 gal. bucket and poured the old into it. I then took a 3 gal. bucket and poured the rest into it and made sure it took the 30qts. I also found a spec sheet showing this. When I was done the dipstick shows just under full.
