I have a rear radiator Freightliner coach with a 3126E. I had the cooling system flushed and changed to Cat ELC a while back. It is now time to add the extender. My question is can I just add it to the over flow tank or do I need to open the radiator and pour it in direct?

According to what I've been told by Freightliner techs, you can add it to the overflow tank. If you need to, you can drain the necessary amount from the radiator.

You'll have to buy the test strips (about $2 each) - they come with a chart to tell you how much Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) to add (you can buy it by the pint). Adding more ELC by itself probably won't do any good. The Cat diesel club web site has more info.

I just reached the 3 year mark on our Extended Life Coolant, and had to add the ELC extender. Information on the bottle stated 1qt of extender for 10 gallons of system capacity. Our system capacity is 11 gallons, and I was told by the local CAT folks that 1 qt would be enough.
I was told to simply add it to the overflow tank, and when the engine gets hot, and then cools down, it will mix the extender into the system.
By the way, the CAT ELC does not use a SCA additive.
