U always have to fill a new filter to the very tippy top with fuel before installing to get her to start.

CAT sells a primer pump that mounts onto your secondary filter on the engine. It is NOT recommended to fill the filter. It can be contaminated. The pump works well.

Good luck!

FYI, CAT does not sell a primer pump for this one and it only has one filter. Yes, CAT recommends not filling the filter but many people do not take that advice and try to fill the filter using the outer holes.

It makes it easier, and safer, if you find a bolt the size of the filter threads to plug the center hole.

Or a short pipe nipple works too. Just have to find the right size since they use a tapered pipe thread.

Well Gang,
When it comes time for me to change the ONE AND ONLY FUEL FILTER I have, I use a very, very large syringe. I put the fuel, in a large clear glass bowl that has been through a serious cleaning and, syringe all the fuel directly out of there, and into the small holes of the filter. I don't bother trying to cover or, fill the large hole with anything. None of the fuel I'm filling it with, ever gets near the center hole. Yep, it takes me about 10 minutes or so to fill it this way but, with NCIS on the tube in my garage, sitting next to the back of our coach, I got plenty of time to fill that filter like that.

What are you using as a large syringe? Turkey baster or something like that?

Bob,
Below are the two main ones I use. They are both 60 CC or, 2 OZ versions. Yep, like stated, it does take about 8-10 minutes but, I'm in no hurry. I got them from the Medics I used to work with on the FD.

That's why I install an inline electric fuel pump in this type of system with no other way to prime up without making a mess.

It saves time, plus wear and tear on the starter, and a lot less frustrating when things don't go as planned.

These are available on Amazon for under $7.00 per ten. i.e. 70 cents apiece and they qualify for free shipping.

2 oz Syringe On Amazon

I use them for changing the oil in my wheel hub bearings, motorcycle primary chain case, etc. I slip on a short length of plastic tubing to reach into recesses to extract the old oil. A great gadget! Good for you, FIRE UP, for pointing it out.

I agree filling the filters is the right way.
I have done this for 40 years on Cat Cummins Detroit.
I love the brain surgeon comment.

Correct me if I'm wrong!
The large hole is the inlet to the filter. Any fuel put in the small holes is on the outlet side of the filter.
Why would you want to have unfiltered fuel going to the engine?
Unless something has changed I really don't understand your reasoning.

If you fill through the large hole the fuel will take a lot longer to soak into the filter because it is being filtered and filtered fuel is what you want going to the engine fuel system.
However just what I learned a millinum ago in trade school!
