Unless something has changed I really don't understand your reasoning.
If you fill through the large hole the fuel will take a lot longer to soak into the filter because it is being filtered and filtered fuel is what you want going to the engine fuel system.
However just what I learned a millinum ago in trade school!

Are you sure the large hole is the fuel inlet to the filter? All the posts I have read say fill the filter through the small holes.

Here's a Donaldson illustration showing that the fuel enters through the small outer holes and exits via the center hole: https://www.donaldson.com/en/engine/shoptalk/070451.pdf

I would crack the line coming into the filter to make sure fuel is getting there. Problem maybe some where else.

Not wrong, just reversed. Sounds better.

I recently purchased a 2005 magna with a c15 cat & was changing the filters & reg maintenance & I always fill my filters & had the same problem. A truck mechanic friend told me to crank the engine over & pump the manual pump at the same time & it started & was fine. I used to have a 1997 beaver with a c12 cat & never had that trouble? not sure. I personally changed a lot of filters & never had that trouble before.

How do you work the pump?

Good luck!

I am having the same problem but am not sure how to work the primer pump. If I unscrew it, it allows me to pump but not sure how many times to pump it. Also, is there an air bleed valve that needs to be opened?

Open air bleed on base on right side of pump. Pump until fuel comes put. Close bleeder and continue to pump until pump is tight. Lock pump and hit the road.

Thanks Scampers227. I looked at the base on the right side of the pump and do not see a bleeder valve. Just the two mounting bolts. See the attached photos. Am I looking in the wrong area?

I've never opened any bleed screw. Just pump until it becomes hard.

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have an air bleed on the base....I'll have to look next time around. I pump mine until the force needed to operate the pump increases drastically, and I can hear fuel "squeaking" past a check valve ( I assume that is what it is.) In any event, I find there is a definite difference in pumping when the air is all out. It does take a bit of time, not just a dozen or so pumps.

Thanks all. I pumped it about 100 times last night and the pressure never got any harder. Just heard a bit of a wheezing noise. Wondering if the primer pump is bad?
