Find out if they did a compression check. The C7s are famous for eating piston rings (compression and oil rings) and head gaskets. A broken ring or a holed piston are the 2 leading causes of excessive crankcase pressure thus causing all the blow-by. I suspect that when the head gasket failed the coolant washed the oil on the cylinder wall(s) causing it to score and perhaps broke a ring. If it did, remember, the C7s do not have repairable engine sleeves already installed. They can be installed but often exceed the cost of simply finding another used C7 to swap.

I had a similar problem with exhaust smoke, blow-by and oil in the coolant.
I decided to investigate and disassembled the engine. What I found was a cracked block in #2 cylinder wall, pretty disappointing with only 29000 mi on the motor. Unfortunately as 94-Newmar stated this engine block does not have removable sleeves making the repair much more costly and complicated. Although the machine shop said they could sleeve my block, I wasn't comfortable with that and went with a new complete engine.

What was the price of a new C7 motor? Did you buy a short block or complete engine?

I found a new government surplus engine, it was about 10k. It was setup for a 24 volt system, so I ended up using my original starter, alternator and computer. I also needed to change pulleys and water pump.
