My C 13 came with a coolant filter and just as I parked it coming back from our last trip it developed a leak - turned out the filter was split.

In its wisdom Monaco installed the exhaust cross over so that it is pressed up against the side of the filter (imagine holding a small can up parallel against a large can). I was able to get it to move less than a 1/4 turn, but in the end the filter collapsed and I can't get any grip on it (no room to work on the other side either). I don't feel like dropping the exhaust cross over out in the field to get at the filter, and it needs an oil change anyway, so I want to drive it up to a truck repair place.

The filter mount has a valve on each of the inlet and outlet feeder tubes so I have turned them both off and reduced the leak to a small drip. My question is - can I drive it like this for maybe 10 -15 miles without starving any part of the engine of coolant?

Yes, just close both valves.

Coolant filters are bypass type. They take a small flow generally no more than 2 GPM. Many engines do not have any coolant filter. Shutting it off hurts nothing. You can still add a supplemental coolant additive by pouring in liquid additive into the radiator fill location.

Thanks guys, I cut it off and moved it to a shop where they had to drop the exhaust to get it off. They then had to bend the exhaust so that in future you can get a wrench over the filter and remove it.

Chalk up another one for Monaco engineering!
