Gents,
We just purchased this '04 Horizon a few weeks ago and haven't really had a chance to get her out on an excursion just yet. We've been outfitting it with all the equipment, tools, interior stocking of shelves, cupboards etc. We're close to being done. Now, I did a search for the answer to my question but, the info I came up with was a bit old.
So, if you don't mind, can anyone tell me just what a good brand of oil would be for our '04 C-7 with 41K on the clock would be? I know during my career with the Fire department, it seems we used "Delo 400" by Chevron for quite a few years. All of our in line diesels used 15-40 while the Detroit 8V-92 series used straight 40.
Those engines as most of you know, have some pretty severe duty. A dead quiet engine is awoken, in seconds it's screaming towards an emergency scene of some type, sometimes shut down immediately because of proximity to injured patients etc and then hurriedly ran back to the barn to await it's next screaming run.
Based on that kind of life, our engines survive pretty well. And, some of them would not get the timely oil change as prescribed by the rules because of the back log of down fire engines. So, they still survived. Anyway, the Delo 400 seemed to do a pretty good job. Any modern, new ideas on what's the latest, greatest besides the use of Synthetic? And, if any of you choose synthetic, what kinds and weight etc? Thanks for your assistance here.
Scott

On construction sites around here they use mostly DELO 15W40. That's what I've used in all my DP's with no problems.
I get mine at Costco by the case naturally.

Delvac (Mobil). Delo (Chevron), and Rotella (Shell) are pretty much the industry standards. Take your pick. I just got mine at Wallmart.
Heres a little tip for you, save these numbers.
If your water collector bowl under your single 02 micron water fuel seperator filter has become a no-see through bowl as mine has here is the replacement . I just ordered mine and its on the way.
Google 320 Bowl kit RK30051 or 320 Bowl kit RK 30063
Be sure to fill from the small outside holes, plug the center hole when prefilling.
Save your old one for a spare.

I started using Shell Rotella T 15w40 after Amsoil raised their prices with shipping out of my reach.

Gents,
I surely thank you for taking the time to reply to my inquiry on oil for our new baby. I've got a satchel about a foot thick on each and every nut and bolt, appliance, paint, roof, faucets, air conditioners, transmission, engine etc but, not one word of BRAND of oil. The Previous owner(s) only had evidence that the oil was changed at a Camping World but, it's not listed as to what exact oil what used. I think I'll use the Delo since I'm used to using it in over a hundred fire trucks over 30 years and only had one of those motors grenade. But, it was a Detroit Series 92.
And thanks for the tip on the water separator. I'll definitely look into that.

Just an FYI on the fuel separator...Your 04 chassis probably has 2 fuel filters so your separator filter should be a 10 to 30 micron and the final filter a 2 micron...
Depending on when your chassis was built, Freightliner used only 1 filter from early 2002 to late 2003 and it has to be a 2 micron as per Cat spec...
