I had my coach in for some service last Oct. While there I was due for an oil change so I asked if the shop could do it. They did but I think it was definitely NOT their specialty. At that time they said I needed a new rear main seal but there shop was not capable of doing it.

I have not had any problems (knock wood) and no leaks or drips. Have put a couple of thousand miles on it since then. Will be going to Gaffney in April.

My question is: How can I tell if I really need a new rear main seal? Is it worth mentioning at next service or should I just let it slide to see if it comes up at that time?

Thanks.

If your Cat is still under the 5 year warranty I would have it looked at at an authorized Cat service center. This work gets mighty expensive out of warranty.

Freightliner at Gaffney may not do a rear seal on a CAT, but refer you to a CAT dealer. A call to them would clear that up. They do lots of good work at Gaffney but I suspect that they would not do this job.

Don't think Gaffney would do any work on the engine itself (Give Pat a call and she can tell you for sure) They could give you an honest answer whether or not the seal is indeed leaking. If so, then they can at least expedite an appointment with the Cat shop to get it taken care of the quickest.

Everybody has been very nice... BUT if there are no leaks, no drips, you don't need a seal. I would find another shop next time. Rear seals do one thing, keep the oil in, if it's not coming out you had some one fishing for $$$$. )
