C7 oil level

Hello everyone, I have changed the oil on my C7 Cat motor and find it rather difficult to hit the just right point showing on the dipstick between low and full. Seems like very little added oil if it is on the low side puts the reading over the full mark. My question is does it hurt to error on the safe side to have it showing over the full mark?

Welcome to iRV2.

Many , many , many posts on getting the oil level and capacity correct, on Caterpillar engines . Search " Dip stick calibration " .
Over filling can lead to oil foaming due to contact with the crankshaft throws and a big mess of oil out the slobber tube.
The dipstick on my coach was out by 2 quarts , and when filled to the full mark , would cover the toad with oil splatter in 1,000 miles.
Get the correct capacity for your engine and only put that amount of oil in , re-mark a new full line , when you check with the engine being shut off overnight .

you cannot go wrong with 19 Qts, even with the short sump pan.
So, how do you do this.
Put in 17 qts,
mark the dip stick
turn on engine
remark dip stick
fill remaining oil

You could call the Cat hot line 1 877 777 3126 with your S/N in hand and ask them, you could ask if any repairs have been made at a Cat shop.

unless you have the deep cast aluminum pan 22 qts is too much.
