CAT 3126 B waterpump belt tensioner
Working on a friends motor and broke the dreaded pivot bolt for the water pump tensioner. After unsuccessfully attempting to drill out the bolt, I saw that there was a second threaded hole about an inch above the pinch bolt on the adjusting slot. I put a second bolt in the slot then pried the pulley down until the belt was tight then snugged both bolts. Have ran the engine for a while and the belt is holding adjustment. Has anyone else tried this and if so was it successful. Thanks for any feedback.

Welcome to iRV2
On re-reading your post , I noticed that you are referring to the pivot bolt, and not just the main pinch bolt.
With two bolts in the adjustment slot you may be limiting the total adjustment available , and may end up having to use a shorter belt.
Is the coach a side or rear rad unit ?

It is a rear mount rad. With the new belt we used I had to move it very little to get it tight. There is about an inch of adjustment left.

So I decided to replace the belts on the C7. I got the old belts off ok but after putting on an identical CAT water pump belt I can't get to the adjustment bolt on the slider since the new belt must be slightly smaller.
I was able to get the same bolt loose by using a socket but now the idler pulley is preventing me from getting a socket on it. Other posts talk about using an offset box wrench but it seems I would have the same issue since I can't get around the bolt head. Guess I'll try another brand belt, hopefully its a little larger. I did notice there is another tapped hole behind the arc shaped slot adjustment. If I swapped the original adjustment bolt I would have plenty of room to get a socket on it but I would think I shouldn't have to move the bolt. Anyone else have a problem tensioning the new belt?
Don

Don, it could be that someone working on the engine previously , had installed the bolt back in the second hole. With a stretched belt the second hole works and the bolt is accessible, as your finding out a new belt limits accessibility.
Keep the belt , and move the bolt , but remember if you have to re-tension the belt , you many have to re-locate the bolt to get the proper tension.

I currently have my rad/cac out to clean them thoroughly and while I am there, I am replacing both belts and hopefully the fan hub bearing, but that is proving to be a bearcat as we speak. I found my serpentine tensioner adjustment would not bent down far enough to clear the water pump pully and I couldn't fit the new belt between them. I had to remove the one bolt that holds the serpentine tensioner, install pump belt then reinstall tensioner. Easy job when it is right in front of you.

Thanks for the comments Skip. I don't believe anyone has worked on the engine as all of the yellow paint was on the bolt heads and I purchased the motorhome from the original owner. Anyway I took the new and old waterpump belt to Autozone and had them measure both belts w/their belt gauge. The new belt was about a 1/2"smaller than the old one. He had a replacement in stock and we checked it and it was closer to the old one. I purchased it and tried it but still could not move the tensioner far enough to clear the pulley so that I could get a socket on it to tighten. So i moved the adjuster bolt to the upper hole that was tapped behind the adjuster slot and was able to tighten it easily while applying tension on the adjuster w/a 1/2" ratchet in the square hole. Put a new serpentine belt and fired it up and all good! Just a note on our CAT the adjuster bolt is a 8.8 metric thread, not 5/16 as some have mentioned in other posts.

Many years ago to satisfy the international market , both Cat and Cummins went metric. Because a 1/2" wrench/socket, fits the bolt, many assume the thread size is 5/16" , not realizing that a 13mm wrench is virtually the same as 1/2" SAE.
Similar problem with 8mm and 5/16", and 14mm and 9/16". Just because the wrench fits , doesn't mean the bolt is SAE.
